The 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500, presented by Gainbridge, witnessed a historic moment as Josef Newgarden of Team Penske received the largest payout in the race’s storied history.
Newgarden earned a staggering $4.288 million from a record-breaking total purse of $18,456,000.
Breaking Records
This year’s Indianapolis 500 shattered previous records, marking the third consecutive year the purse record was surpassed.
The average payout for NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers was $543,000, significantly higher than last year’s average of $500,600.
In comparison, the 2023 purse was $17,021,500, with the winner’s share at $3.666 million, and the 2022 purse stood at $16,000,200, with a $3.1 million winner’s payout.
Historic Payouts
The total purse and Newgarden’s winnings are the largest in the history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” The previous highest purse before 2022 was $14.4 million for the 2008 Indianapolis 500.
Second-place finisher Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren also saw a significant increase in prize money, taking home $1,050,500, surpassing last year’s second-place prize.
Statements from Officials
Mark Miles, President and CEO of Penske Entertainment Corp., highlighted the significance of the record-breaking purse.
“The Indianapolis 500 is the greatest race in the world, and this record-breaking purse is reflective of just how monumental competing in and winning at Indy is for these drivers,” Miles said.
“Despite weather challenges, the Month of May featured packed grandstands and intense on-track action. Presenting this purse is the ideal end cap to an epic month.”
Special Awards and Rookie Honors
NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson earned the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year honors for his impressive performance.
Larson, representing Arrow McLaren/Rick Hendrick, was attempting to complete “The Double” by racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600.
He received a $50,000 bonus for being named Rookie of the Year, bringing his total earnings to $178,000.
Victory Celebration and Bonuses
The Indianapolis 500 purse is a combination of awards from Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NTT INDYCAR SERIES, and other designated special awards.
These were presented at the Victory Celebration held at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis. Newgarden’s winnings included a $440,000 rollover bonus from BorgWarner for securing back-to-back victories.
This bonus increases by $20,000 each year and has only been awarded once before to Helio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002.
Upcoming Events
The next race in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, scheduled for Sunday, June 2, on the streets of Downtown Detroit.
The race will be broadcast live on USA Network, Peacock, and the INDYCAR Radio Network, starting at noon (ET).
Josef Newgarden’s historic win and record-breaking payout underscore the prestige and excitement of the Indianapolis 500, continuing to cement its legacy as one of the most significant events in motorsport.
