How To Avoid a Car Crash During a Rainstorm?

How To Avoid Car Crash During Rainstorm

There are several reasons for crashes taking place these days, but poor weather tops the list. Poor weather conditions, especially rainstorms, are a significant reason behind many life-threatening car accidents.

Excessive rainfall blurs driver’s vision and overpowers their senses. Under such circumstances, one can crash into the vehicle in front. If that happens, a driver could experience anything from scratches and fractures to permanent damage. In addition to physical pain, witnessing a crash is also mentally agonizing.

Whether in the car or just passing by, the incident will remain a part of your memory and keep hurting you. Therefore, one should take all necessary precautions to avoid witnessing such situations. The following steps could help individuals avoid crashes during heavy rainstorms and other extreme conditions.

Maintain a Slow Speed

Speeding is the worst mistake to make in heavy rain. Most accidents result from drivers overspeeding and not stopping in time. Well, no matter what you do on regular days, when the weather isn’t favorable outside, always keep to a minimum speed limit.

The reason for driving slowly in rainstorms is that the friction between the road and the tires is low. In such circumstances, your brakes might not function properly, and you won’t be able to stop in time.

To keep yourself and your family safe in rainy weather, it’s necessary to maintain a speed limit. According to Dolinsky Law in Alabama, “One of the leading reasons for accidents is the driver’s overspeeding.”

You cannot imagine the impact an overspeeding car experiences when it crashes into another vehicle. Not only are there chances of sustaining injuries, but it could result in a chain reaction leading to multiple casualties. Thus, always drive slowly when the roads are slippery.

Use Headlights at All Times

Rainstorms don’t only lower friction between roads and car tires but also decrease the visibility of drivers. That’s why it is of utmost importance to use headlights to make your vehicle visible to others and see cars in front.

Keep your tail lights on at all times, and don’t forget to keep a low beam. Often, individuals make the mistake of using a high beam, but a high beam makes it harder to see in rain due to the reflection of light.

You should also avoid fog lights because similar to high beams, these can obscure the driver’s vision.

Use Your Car’s Brakes Correctly

Using your brakes suddenly could cause a possible loss of control over the vehicle and that is something you don’t want to happen.

The best option is to steer the vehicle in the right direction. Afterward, slowly start applying the brakes. The car will eventually slow down, and safely stop.

Don’t Put Your Car in Cruise Control

These days, cruise control has become a popular option amongst drivers. After all, it helps individuals relax while their car drives to their destination. However, this feature isn’t meant for rainstorms.

Using cruise control could lead to a devastating crash because the system might not comprehend its surroundings. When it’s raining heavily, the best and safest option is manual mode.

Since the road is slippery, a human driver is better suited to handling the situation.

Keep a Safe Distance from the Next Car

Another method to avoid crashing into another vehicle during a rainstorm is by maintaining a distance.

Instead of keeping your car close to the vehicles in front, try to maintain some space. That way, when another car suddenly stops, you will have ample time to react and apply brakes. It saves your life and your vehicle from damage.

Pull Over if You Can’t See

Lastly, if the weather is deteriorating beyond your expectations and you can’t see anything on the road, try to stop at the side for a few moments. Let the weather settle down, and then resume your journey. Some drivers push themselves into driving without road visibility and end up losing their lives in collisions. So, pull over and stay in the same place till the rain stops or slows.

Understanding the Liability of Such Accidents

Crashes during rainstorms can be the fault of anyone. At times, it’s the fault of multiple drivers who failed to follow safety precautions, resulting in the incident. No matter who is to blame, you can pursue the matter in court.

If another driver’s fault is established, you will get compensation for every major and minor injury, and the perpetrator will even pay for the damage caused to your car. However, the driver’s negligence must be proved.

Conclusion

Poor weather conditions can result in horrible crashes, and the only way to save oneself is by following all necessary safety protocols. From driving slowly to using appropriate lighting, multiple methods can ensure your and your family’s safety while on the road. No one wishes to experience an accident, but if you tragically end up in one, get help from legal experts.
