Gypsy Rose Blanchard has announced that she is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Ken Urker. In a heartfelt nine-minute YouTube video posted on Tuesday, Blanchard, 32, shared the joyous news with her followers, revealing that she is 11 weeks pregnant. She described the pregnancy as a “blessing” despite it being unplanned.
“We’re both very excited. This was not planned at all; it was completely unexpected, but we’re both very excited to take on this new journey of parenthood,” Blanchard said in the video. She also mentioned that their baby is due in January 2025.
A New Chapter for Blanchard
Blanchard’s announcement comes shortly after her split from ex-husband Ryan Anderson. The couple divorced earlier this year, just three months after they got married while Blanchard was still incarcerated.
Anderson, a 37-year-old special education teacher from Louisiana, married Blanchard in 2022 during her prison sentence for her role in the murder of her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.
Blanchard was released from prison last year after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence for second-degree murder. Her mother was killed by Blanchard’s then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, who is currently serving a life sentence.
Reflecting on Motherhood
In the YouTube video, Blanchard candidly discussed her pregnancy symptoms, including food cravings and mood swings. She also shared her thoughts on the profound changes of expecting a child. “Suddenly, it’s not about you,” she said. “It’s not about anything other than the tiny little life inside you that you are now in charge of protecting.”
Blanchard became emotional as she spoke about her desire to give her child the nurturing and love she wished she had received from her mother. “That little tiny life is a baby, a little tiny human that’s yours, that you have to make sure you protect, you love, you take care of,” she said, tearing up. “All of the things I wished I could have had when I was little. … All of the things that I wanted in a mother, I want to give to this baby.”
I just want to be a good mother for my child; I want to be everything my mother wasn’t,” Blanchard added, expressing her commitment to being a loving and supportive parent.
A Complex Past
Blanchard’s life story has been a complex and tragic one, marked by years of abuse at the hands of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee, who suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, forced her daughter to pretend she was gravely ill, subjecting her to unnecessary medical treatments and procedures.
The mother-daughter duo received sympathy and charitable donations, including a home from Habitat for Humanity, based on Dee Dee’s fabricated claims about Gypsy Rose’s health.
In 2015, Blanchard, then 23, conspired with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder her mother in an attempt to escape the abuse. Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee to death while Blanchard hid in a bathroom. The case attracted national attention and was the subject of the 2017 HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and the 2019 Hulu miniseries “The Act.”
Moving Forward
Blanchard’s release from prison in December 2023 marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Since then, she has been working to rebuild her life and find stability. Her relationship with Ken Urker, who had been a pen pal while she was in prison, has rekindled, and the couple is now preparing to welcome their first child together.
In her video, Blanchard acknowledged that some people might question her readiness for motherhood. Still, she dismissed these concerns, stating that no one is ever truly ready to become a parent. “I know that there are going to be people that feel like I’m not ready to be a mother,” she said. “I don’t know if anyone’s ready to be a mother.”
Blanchard emphasized the transformative nature of becoming a parent and the responsibility it entails. It’s an amazing feeling when your whole world shifts, and suddenly it’s not about you,” she said. “It’s not about anything other than this tiny little life inside you that you are now in charge of protecting.”
A New Beginning with Ken Urker
Blanchard and Urker’s relationship has seen its ups and downs, but they are now committed to building a life together. Blanchard shared that she and Urker grew up in broken homes and are determined to provide a stable and loving environment for their child.
I grew up without a father, pretty much, and he grew up in a family where, you know, his parents got divorced,” she said. “I think we both agree that neither of us wants our child to be in that situation.”
Blanchard expressed her gratitude for the unexpected journey she finds herself on and her excitement for the future. Everything that has ever happened to me in my life suddenly doesn’t matter because it all led me to be who I am today, and it all led me to this moment right here, right now. And that’s a blessing,” she said.
