Zoe Saldaña Shines in Long-Awaited Spanish Role in ‘Emilia Pérez

Zoe Saldaña, celebrated for her roles in blockbuster franchises like “Avatar,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Star Trek,” embarks on an exciting new venture with Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez.” The film is a unique blend of genres—a musical thriller that challenges conventions while offering Saldaña an opportunity to act, sing, and rap in Spanish. This marks her first major role in her native language, a milestone in her already illustrious career.

A Career-Defining Milestone for Zoe Saldaña

Saldaña, whose father was Dominican and mother Puerto Rican, has always been fluent in Spanish. Despite this, she had not had the chance to perform in the language throughout her career. In an interview with Elle Magazine, Saldaña candidly shared that the opportunities to showcase her bilingual abilities were rare.

“Either the project just wasn’t the right fit for me, or an Afro-Caribbean Latina wasn’t the right fit for the project,” she explained. Saldaña also pointed to the pervasive influence of colonialism and colorism within Latin America as a major barrier. She spoke about navigating a world where directors’ visions and traditional biases often sidelined her from Spanish-language roles.

“While I wanted to honor the visions of directors, there was another side to this equation—the prevalence of colorism and colonialism,” she said. “This industry is evolving, but it’s been a journey to find projects where I fit.”

Instead of waiting for opportunities, Saldaña embraced a diverse range of roles, famously portraying characters like Neytiri in Avatar and Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. “I’ve danced to the beat of my own drum,” she remarked, referring to her roles that took her into fantastical realms, including playing characters painted in blue and green.

However, as her career progressed, she found herself yearning for a deeper connection to her cultural roots. “After 15 years, I was ready to explore something different, something that felt closer to home,” she admitted. That reconnection found its outlet in “Emilia Pérez.”

“Emilia Pérez”: A Genre-Defying Cinematic Journey

Directed by Jacques Audiard, “Emilia Pérez” is based on the 2018 novel “Écoute” by Boris Razon. The film follows the journey of Rita, a highly skilled but overworked lawyer in Mexico. Played by Saldaña, Rita is at a pivotal point in her career—winning a major case but simultaneously getting drawn into the complex web of a cartel boss’s secret.

The cartel boss, known as Manitas, is portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascón. While feared and menacing in the world of crime, Manitas harbors a deeply personal and long-hidden desire: transitioning into a woman and living life as Emilia Pérez. The film explores themes of identity, acceptance, and transformation, with Saldaña’s Rita at the center, helping Emilia navigate the intricacies of this emotional journey.

Adding to the narrative complexity is Selena Gomez, who plays Jessi, the disillusioned wife of Manitas. Jessi’s struggles and reactions bring a raw emotional layer to the story, illustrating the ripple effects of identity transformations on loved ones. Later in the film, Adriana Paz joins as Epifanía, Emilia’s love interest, further enriching the film’s exploration of human connections.

A Visual and Musical Spectacle

“Emilia Pérez” isn’t just another musical; it’s a visually stunning, boundary-pushing experience. The film’s opening number alone sets it apart, blending elaborate choreography with sequences that seamlessly weave between reality and imagination. Backed by a talented ensemble of dancers and actors, Saldaña leads the audience through a musical journey that is as emotionally resonant as it is visually captivating.

The integration of musical elements into the storytelling transforms the narrative, making it both relatable and larger-than-life. Each song and dance number offers insight into the characters’ internal struggles and triumphs, adding depth to the film’s already rich plot.

Breaking Barriers in Representation

One of the most compelling aspects of “Emilia Pérez” is its bold representation. It brings underrepresented voices to the forefront, highlighting Afro-Caribbean identities and tackling issues like gender identity and self-acceptance in a nuanced way. For Saldaña, this project reflects her long-standing desire to see more diversity in Hollywood and beyond.

In her interview, Saldaña reflected on the importance of casting directors who have championed her career over the years. These professionals, she noted, often went against the grain to advocate for her in rooms where she was not an obvious choice.

“They were amazing women, always finding these diamonds in the rough,” she said, crediting their persistence in pushing her auditions to directors and producers who might have otherwise dismissed her. “They would say, ‘No, no, you need to watch her,’ even when others were ready to go in a traditional direction.”

A Celebration of Talent at Cannes

The bold storytelling and dynamic performances in “Emilia Pérez” did not go unnoticed. At the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, the film’s lead actresses—Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz—were collectively honored with the Best Actress Award. This recognition highlights the extraordinary depth and dedication each actress brought to the film.

Critics have lauded the movie for its genre-defying narrative, innovative cinematography, and daring exploration of themes rarely addressed in mainstream cinema. The emotional complexity and visual brilliance make “Emilia Pérez” a standout among contemporary films.

Zoe Saldaña’s Next Chapter

For Saldaña, “Emilia Pérez” is more than a film—it’s a personal milestone and a testament to her resilience in an industry that has not always embraced her identity. As she continues to push boundaries and take on challenging roles, Saldaña remains an inspiring figure for aspiring actors and advocates for diversity in entertainment.

With “Emilia Pérez” now streaming on Netflix, audiences worldwide can witness Saldaña’s groundbreaking performance and the film’s bold, genre-bending narrative. The movie invites viewers to reflect on themes of identity, transformation, and the human desire for self-expression, all while enjoying a visually and musically stunning cinematic experience.
