Copa America 2024: Teams Can Now Include 26 Players in Their Squads

copa america 2024 squad limit increased to 26 players

In an exciting development for football fans, teams participating in this summer’s men’s Copa America will now be able to name squads of up to 26 players instead of the usual 23. This significant change was confirmed by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) during a meeting held in Thailand on May 16. The decision aims to provide teams with more flexibility and options throughout the tournament.

Match Day Rules

Despite the expanded squad size, the number of delegation members allowed on match days will remain unchanged at 23. This includes players and coaching staff, ensuring that matchday dynamics and management remain consistent with previous tournaments. The intention behind this rule is to maintain a balanced and fair competition while still allowing teams the benefit of a larger squad for strategic and logistical purposes.

Official Statement from CONMEBOL

CONMEBOL explained the decision in an official statement, which read:

“Regarding the number of players on the roster, the decision is that each team may register up to a maximum of 26 players in the competition, maintaining a total of 50 individuals in the delegation covered by the event’s organization (accommodation, meals, transportation, etc., according to the financial regime and prize structure outlined in Chapter 17 of the Competition Regulations). All players (up to 26) must be included in the Provisional List submitted by May 5, 2024.”

This statement highlights the organizational aspects and the logistical support provided by the event’s organizers, ensuring that all teams are adequately prepared and supported throughout the competition.

Staff Adjustment

In addition to the expanded player roster, there are specific guidelines regarding the total number of delegation members. If a team decides to register more than 23 players, it must automatically reduce the number of staff members to keep the total delegation at 50. For instance, if a team registers 26 players, they can only have 24 staff members. This adjustment is crucial for maintaining the overall balance and efficiency of team operations during the tournament.

Similar Changes in Europe

This adjustment is not unique to Copa America. A similar decision was made for this summer’s European Championship in Germany, which was announced in April. This trend indicates a broader shift in international football tournaments, reflecting the evolving needs and strategies of modern football teams.

importance of the Change

The decision to expand the squad size is expected to have several positive impacts on the tournament. Firstly, it allows teams to have more depth in their squads, which is particularly beneficial in managing player fatigue and injuries. Secondly, it provides an opportunity for more players to gain international experience, which can be invaluable for their development and careers. Lastly, it enhances the overall competitiveness of the tournament, as teams can field their best possible line-ups even in the face of unexpected challenges.

The expanded squad size will require adjustments in training, team selection, and tactical planning.
