5 Black Tie-Friendly Omega Watches You Should Buy

You received a black-tie invitation in your email. What would you wear? If you are like many others, every time you receive an invitation, whether that be an invitation to a wedding or a business event, there’s usually one part you zero in onthe dress code. While black-tie events are not that common, they still do happen and they’re most likely to be formal banquets organized by large corporations and other professional organizations.

However, besides dress styles, there’s another aspect that you should focus on: which watch to wear. While the norm these days encourages you to defy traditional etiquette, there are quite a few unspoken rules for selecting a watch for this kind of event.

Considerations in Wearing a Watch on Black-Tie Events

There are a few considerations to ensure that you’re wearing the right watch when attending black-tie events. These are as follows:

  1. A formal watch should be thin enough to fit underneath a shirt cuff and jacket.
  2. It should pair elegantly with a tuxedo, meaning it has to be classic and made with high-quality materials.
  3. It should be simple enough to highlight only the time—nobody needs a perpetual calendar or complicated dials on a formal gathering.

Watches that fit these criteria are often two- and three-hand watches or the so-called time-only watches that showcase only hours, minutes, and seconds. While these styles have taken a backseat in the past few years to make way for watches offering an abundance of complications, there are still brands that understand that these watches still have a place in the wardrobe of well-dressed men.

Nevertheless, some of them have integrated functionality with classic style to offer watches that look appropriate even on black-tie events. Let’s start with this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Black Ceramic Watch.

5 Black-Tie Friendly Watches From Omega Seamaster Collection

1. Seamaster Diver 300M Black Black Ceramic Watch

The Swiss luxury brand has a reputation for using ceramic to produce high-quality watches that are lightweight, heat-resistant, hypoallergenic, durable, and extremely versatile. The latest in its ceramic watches include this Seamaster Diver reference that is rendered in sleek, masculine all-black ceramic.

It’s an updated version of the 2019 Omega Seamaster 300M Black Ceramic and & Titanium, which, as the name suggests, was a blend of ceramic and titanium components. The latter material was used largely for the components that Omega could not manufacture in ceramic. However, times have changed and most of the components of the 2021 Seamaster are made of ceramic. These include the 43.5mm case, bezel, crowns, dial, and strap buckle.

Despite its all-black finish, it’s interesting how legibility is not an issue with this watch. It’s owed to the finishing techniques applied in this reference, including the use of the special anthracite-colored Superluminova lume that glows blue. Overall, the watch looks and feels elegant on the wrist, and with its stylish all-black finish, it doesn’t look appropriate in black-tie events—that’s despite its high-quality black rubber strap.

2. Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial GMT Chronograph Ref. 231.13.43.52.02.001

This classic watch pays tribute to the brand’s rich maritime heritage, with its distinctive dial design, reminiscent of the wooden decks of luxury sailboats. It features a silvery dial with the Teak Concept pattern, white lacquered sub-dials, and rose gold-tone hands. There is also a date display at 6 o’clock, all of which are protected with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass.

A bezel is mounted on the case and is presented on an elegant alligator strap. This Seamaster Aqua Terra watch runs on the Co-Axial Caliber 9605 movement visible through the transparent case back. It has a 60-hour power reserve and is water-resistant at 150 meters.

3. Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial GMT Chronograph Ref. 231.13.43.52.06.001

If you’re looking for a black version of the Aqua Terra Co-Axial GMT Chronograph, this one is for you. Instead of a silvery dial, it features a black Teak dial on a 43mm stainless steel case and a black alligator strap. It features the same sub-dial displays at 3 and 9 o’clock and a date display at 6 o’clock.

What’s great about a black dial watch is that it easily matches formal attire. Plus, it can be paired with almost anything as long as you do it right. This reference is also powered by the Co-Axial Caliber 9605 movement with a power reserve of 60 hours and water resistance of 150 meters.

4. Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial Annual Calendar Ref. 231.13.43.22.03.002

Models with a deep blue dial make for a formal watch, particularly when paired with a matching leather strap. This blue dial Seamaster Aqua Terra looks both classic and perfect for formal situations.

It features a 43mm stainless steel case with a fixed stainless steel bezel. The blue dial sports luminous silver-tone hands and index hour markers. There’s also the distinct month and date windows at 3 o’clock—a feature of the annual calendar watches from Omega. The watch is powered by the Co-Axial Calibre 8601 automatic movement and is water-resistant at 150 meters.

5. Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronograph 42mm Automatic White Dial Ref. 2812.30.31

A watch that will get you noticed is one with a white dial complemented with blue indexes and hands similar to this Aqua Terra Chronograph.

It features a white dial with three sub-dial displays and a date window at 6 o’clock. However, what renders this watch unique is that instead of the usual blue dial, it uses this classic color in its hands and indexes. Overall, this creates a legible watch that looks elegant and comfortable in a leather strap.

Takeaway

Traditionally, wearing a watch in a black-tie affair was a no-no. Besides looking inappropriate, it was considered rude to look at the time during such gatherings. But, today, it’s completely acceptable and stylish as long as you wear one that is classic, formal, and elegant. The Omega watches on this list easily fit these categories, making it easier for you to find a watch that you can wear with a tuxedo.
