In a surprising turn of events, the Atlanta Hawks beat the odds and won the coveted first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery.
The Hawks, who finished the regular season with a 36-46 record and a tenth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, had a mere 3% chance of landing the top selection.
The announcement left Hawks General Manager Landry Fields grinning ear-to-ear. “It was a shock,” Fields admitted.
“When I first saw that it wasn’t us between 10 and 12, that launched us into the top four. I was like, all right, we’ve got a real shot at this thing. A bit of surprise, but a lot of excitement.”
The Hawks haven’t advanced past the first round of the playoffs since their unexpected run to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals.
Landing the first overall pick presents an opportunity to inject fresh talent and potentially accelerate their rebuilding process.
While the Hawks have decisions to make regarding their backcourt duo of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, the top pick allows them to build around a potential cornerstone player.
“Our group has been fantastic,” Fields said. “There’s a whole lot of trust. They’ve put in the work. We’ll kind of lean into our process and take it from there.”
The Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Detroit Pistons round out the top five selections in this year’s draft, which lacks a clear-cut No. 1 prospect like last year’s generational talent, Victor Wembanyama.
While the draft class may not have a consensus top pick, Fields disputed the notion that it lacks star power. “Every draft class has great players in it,” he said.
Potential candidates for the top selection include French prospects Alex Sarr, a 7-foot-1 center known for his size, mobility, and rim protection, and sharpshooting forward Zaccharie Risacher, lauded for his dynamic outside shooting and defensive versatility.
American prospects like Connecticut’s Stephon Castle, a one-and-done guard who played a pivotal role in the Huskies’ recent NCAA championship run, and Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham, both talented playmakers and perimeter threats, are also expected to be in the mix for early selections.
With the draft order set, teams will now intensify their scouting efforts and deliberations to determine the best fit for their respective organizations.
For the Hawks, the unexpected windfall of the top pick presents an exciting opportunity to reshape their future.
