All American Season 6 has been officially renewed. The show, which has been on The CW since 2018 and produced the spinoff All American: Homecoming, is now in season 5, with the second half of the season expected to return on January 23, 2023. Although the series is performing well, the future of every show on the current CW slate is uncertain following the network’s transfer to Nexstar by its former parent corporations.

Many programs were canceled as a result of that decision, and the corporation indicated its desire to further cut the existing CW slate, with a focus on rejuvenating the network with new original programming for the 2023-2024 season, preserving just roughly 5 maximum high-performing series.

Nexstar has officially renewed the football drama All American season 6, making it the first CW series to be added to the schedule for 2023-2024. Season 5 of the show ranked first on the network in the coveted 18-49 demographic while also gaining the largest cross-platform audience. This made the renewal a no-brainer, even if Nexstar is looking for lower-budget series to populate the network following reports that The CW has never produced a profit since its inception in 2006.

Given that All American is one of The CW’s top shows, so much so that it has spawned a spinoff, it doesn’t necessarily provide insight into whether other shows have a chance to continue around. However, according to The CW’s December midseason statistics, the football series only scored #1 overall because of the number of viewers it had in the first week of the episodes’ runs, and how many of those viewers were in the 18-49 demographic. In terms of total viewership, three other series outperformed it and thus have a fighting chance of being renewed.

If All American is safe, it appears that the Jared Padalecki remake Western Walker is secure as well, as it was the only CW program to outperform a single Big 4 network (it beat out Fox’s small town sitcom Welcome to Flatch). Walker Independence, a spinoff of that series, was likewise a hit in its first season, earning the second most total viewers across the entire network. The Winchesters, a prequel series to the CW’s main show Supernatural, came in third place after 15 seasons.

However, if All American is safe and the other series may be considered safe bets, that leaves only one series to potentially fill out the Nexstar slate of five. The brand link may allow All American: Homecoming to take that spot, especially because it is the network’s fourth highest-rated series overall. However, if that hotly contested place shifts, it may be a close battle between the reboot series Kung Fu and the network’s No. 1 unscripted program Penn & Teller: Fool Us.
