Jennifer Lopez on ‘Unstoppable’ & Empowered Roles: Breaking Barriers

Jennifer Lopez Empowered Characters Unstoppable Spider Woman

Jennifer Lopez, the multi-talented artist and Hollywood A-lister, continues to captivate audiences with her versatility and dedication to storytelling.

Her latest projects, the sports drama Unstoppable and the highly anticipated adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman, showcase Lopez’s commitment to playing empowered and inspiring characters, reflecting her own journey as a Latina woman and mother.

Unstoppable: A Story of Triumph and Motherhood

In Unstoppable, Lopez portrays Judy Robles, a single mother who raises her son, Anthony, against all odds. The film, which has been generating significant awards buzz, tells the true story of Anthony Robles, a college wrestling champion born with only one leg. At screenings, Judy herself has been greeted with standing ovations for her incredible story of resilience and perseverance.

“I tell her all the time, ‘You need to own who you are and what you’ve done,’” Lopez shares, speaking of Judy’s humility. “You’re inspiring every mother who has ever struggled. You really have triumphed. You’ve raised a son who has become a leader, and you deserve credit.”

Anthony’s achievements, both on and off the mat, are a testament to his mother’s unwavering support. After helping Anthony graduate and pursue his dreams, Judy returned to school herself, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and eventually becoming an associate athletic director at Arizona State University.

For Lopez, Judy’s journey struck a deeply personal chord. “We were kindred spirits,” Lopez reflects. “We both grew up Latina in this country. We both had children and have hopes and dreams for them. We both had challenging relationships, which left us holding our families together.”

The role has earned Lopez some of the best reviews of her acting career, reminding audiences of her nuanced talent beyond her pop icon status. Co-star Jharrel Jerome, who plays Anthony, recalls being initially intimidated by Lopez but quickly recognizing her as a dedicated scene partner. “She just wanted to get it right,” Jerome says.

Honored for a Lifetime of Groundbreaking Work

Lopez’s dedication to her craft has not gone unnoticed. She is being honored with the Legend & Groundbreaker Award at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival, a recognition that celebrates her impact on the entertainment industry.

“I’m humbled; I’m blown away,” Lopez says of the award. “But I still have so much more to do. I’m at the halfway mark. I feel like my best work is in front of me. My biggest projects are in front of me, and my biggest successes. Everything is in the future.”

Kiss of the Spider Woman: A Love Story Beyond Boundaries

One of those future projects is the film adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman, set to debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Lopez stars as Aurora, a classic screen siren who exists in the fantasies of Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser imprisoned in Argentina. The story explores the power of imagination and love to transcend the harshest realities.

“It’s probably my favorite movie experience,” Lopez reveals. “It’s a film about how love transcends everything — the hardest circumstances, gender, social prejudices. Everything.”

This deeply layered role is a departure from the gritty realism of Unstoppable, yet it continues Lopez’s tradition of portraying strong, multi-dimensional characters.

A Legacy of Empowered Women

From her breakthrough role in Selena to acclaimed performances in Out of Sight and Hustlers, Lopez has consistently gravitated toward roles that highlight the strength and resilience of women. This pattern is no coincidence.

“Women are strong,” Lopez says. “We have to be. From the minute women are born, we’re always having to prove ourselves, to show we’re good enough. That creates a type of strength. And then a lot of us give birth — and there’s nothing that makes you stronger than doing that.”

Lopez’s portrayal of characters like Judy Robles and Aurora reflects her understanding of the complexities of womanhood and her belief in the power of storytelling to inspire change.
