The highly anticipated premiere of 1923 Season 2, now streaming on Paramount+, opened with a touching tribute to late actor Cole Brings Plenty.
The rising star, who portrayed Pete Plenty Clouds in the Western drama, passed away last year at the age of 27. The show honored his memory with a special dedication in the first episode.
Remembering Cole Brings Plenty
Brings Plenty, the nephew of Yellowstone actor and Native American consultant Mo Brings Plenty, was a promising talent in the 1923 universe. He played Pete Plenty Clouds, a sheepherder introduced in Season 1, who shared screen time with Teonna Rainwater, portrayed by Aminah Nieves. The Season 1 finale saw Pete riding off with Teonna and her father, Runs His Horse (Michael Spears), after Teonna escaped from a brutal Catholic boarding school.
His role was set to expand in Season 2, with a deeper exploration of Pete and Teonna’s relationship. Nieves recalled the actor’s excitement about his growing presence in the show. “He was so excited, especially when he learned that he was going to be in almost every episode,” she told media. She fondly remembered their discussions about their evolving on-screen relationship and how they joked about the sibling-like bond they shared in real life.
His Tragic Passing and Ongoing Questions
Cole Brings Plenty was reported missing by his family in early April 2023 after failing to attend a scheduled Zoom meeting with his agent. On April 5, his body was discovered in Johnson County, Kansas. Authorities ruled out foul play, but his family has publicly questioned the investigation, demanding further clarity on the circumstances surrounding his death.
His father, Joe Brings Plenty Sr., spoke at the Red Nation Film Festival in November, expressing his ongoing fight for answers. “We want a full investigation,” he stated, emphasizing the family’s doubts regarding the official findings.
A Tribute at the Premiere
The Season 2 premiere event in Los Angeles saw an outpouring of love and remembrance for Brings Plenty. His family attended the star-studded screening, where Paramount Media Networks CEO Chris McCarthy acknowledged the actor’s contributions to the show. In the opening credits, the first episode of 1923 Season 2 featured an in memoriam segment with his name and character.
Aminah Nieves, who shared many scenes with Brings Plenty, expressed her deep loss at the event. “Coco was my brother,” she said, using his nickname. “The only reason I’m here tonight is to honor him wholeheartedly.”
A New Actor Steps into the Role
With Brings Plenty’s tragic passing, 1923 had to recast Pete Plenty Clouds for Season 2. The role is now played by Jeremy Guana, a close friend of Brings Plenty’s. Nieves believes Guana was the perfect choice to continue Pete’s story while respecting Brings Plenty’s legacy. “Jeremy did his absolute best to honor Coco in the biggest possible way,” she said.
Brings Plenty’s legacy lives on through his work in 1923 and other projects, including The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger and Into The Wild Frontier. While his untimely death leaves many questions unanswered, his impact on the show and those who knew him remains profound.
