Pickleball for Beginners

Pickleball is among the most popular sports in the United States, with an estimated 48.3 million adults playing it in the past year.

This easy-to-learn game combines ping-pong, badminton, and tennis elements, making it accessible for all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re looking to pick up a new hobby or stay active, pickleball is an excellent choice. Here’s a comprehensive guide to get you started.

Introduction to Pickleball

Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. The game can be enjoyed indoors and outdoors and is suitable for singles or doubles.

The simple rules and minimal equipment required make it an attractive option for anyone looking to enter a new sport. It’s a fun way to exercise and a great social activity you can enjoy with friends and family.

Essential Equipment

1. Paddles

The paddle is the primary piece of equipment in pickleball. Paddles come in various materials and range from $30 to over $100. Beginners can start with an affordable paddle and upgrade as they become more committed.

Ensure your paddle is approved by USA Pickleball (USAPA) if you plan to participate in official tournaments. Popular choices include the Recess Zuma Pickleball Paddle, priced at $86 from Recess Pickleball, and the PICKLD Fiberglass Pickleball Paddle, available for $39.95 on Amazon.

Other options like the Brooklyn Pickleball Co. Carbon Fiber Paddle ($29.95 on Amazon) and the Play Paddles Carbon Fiber Pickleball Paddle ($71 on Amazon) also offer excellent performance for beginners.

2. Balls

Pickleballs are lightweight balls with holes, similar to wiffle balls. Outdoor balls have 40 holes, while indoor balls have 26 holes. Always carry a pack of balls with you for an easy pickup game.

8. A Hat or Visor

A hat or visor can help shield your eyes from the sun, ensuring you never miss a shot. The Under Armour Unisex Chill Run Dash Cap, available at Under Armour, is a popular choice for its breathable fabric and comfortable fit. Other options include the Nike Featherlight Cap for $25 and the Adidas Superlite Cap for $20.

9. Finding a Place to Play

Many parks and recreation centers nationwide have added pickleball courts, making finding a place to play easy. If your local park lacks dedicated pickleball courts, you can use portable nets to set up a game on a tennis court or in a gymnasium.

Websites like the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) offer a court locator tool that can help you find nearby courts. Additionally, many community centers and sports complexes now offer pickleball programs and leagues for players of all levels.

10. Basic Rules and Gameplay

Pickleball is played on a 20×44-foot court with a net set at 36 inches high on the sides and 34 inches in the middle. The game can be played as singles or doubles. Here are some basic rules to get you started:

11. Serving

The serve must be underhand and hit diagonally across the court. The server stands behind the baseline on the right side and must hit the ball below the waist. The goal of the serve is to start the rally without giving the serving team an immediate advantage.

The serve must clear the non-volley zone (the kitchen) and land in the diagonal service court. Each server gets one serve attempt unless the ball touches the net and lands in the correct service court (let serve).

12. Double Bounce Rule

The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. This rule ensures that each team has a fair chance to play the ball before it can be hit out of the air.

This promotes longer rallies and makes the game more strategic and enjoyable. The serving team must let the return of the serve bounce before playing the ball, and the receiving team must let the serve bounce before returning it.

13. Non-Volley Zone

Also known as the kitchen, this area extends 7 feet from the net on each side. Players cannot volley while standing in the kitchen, ensuring the game remains fair and preventing players from dominating the net.

You can enter the kitchen to play a ball that has bounced, but you must exit before playing another volley. This rule prevents players from executing smashes directly at the net, maintaining a level playing field.

14. Scoring

Only the serving team can score points. Games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by 2 points. If the score is tied at 10-10, the game continues until one team wins by 2 points.

This scoring system ensures that the serving team has to work to gain and maintain an advantage. In doubles, both players on a team get to serve before the serve goes to the opposing team.

Tips for Beginners

Find a Partner

Pickleball is more fun with friends. Find a partner or join a local pickleball club to meet other players and improve your skills. Playing with others also helps you learn the rules and strategies more quickly. Many communities have pickleball leagues and social groups that welcome new players.

Take a Lesson

Consider taking a beginner’s lesson or attending a clinic to learn the basics from experienced players. Many parks and recreation centers offer these classes. A structured lesson can help you grasp the fundamentals and develop good habits. Private lessons are also available if you prefer one-on-one instruction.

Practice Regularly

The more you play, the better you’ll get. Make time to practice regularly and focus on improving your technique and strategy. Consistent practice helps you build muscle memory and enhances your overall game performance. Mix up practice sessions by playing with different partners and opponents to challenge yourself.

Stay Hydrated

Always bring a water bottle to the court and stay hydrated, especially when playing in hot weather. Dehydration can affect your performance and health, so drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after playing. Sports drinks can also help replenish electrolytes lost through sweat.

Wear Appropriate Gear

Invest in good-quality court shoes and comfortable athletic clothing to prevent injuries and ensure you can move freely. Proper gear enhances your performance and reduces the risk of common sports injuries. Moisture-wicking fabrics can help keep you cool and dry during intense matches.

Summary

Pickleball is a fun, engaging, and easy-to-learn sport that offers a fantastic way to stay active and socialize. With minimal equipment required and many locations providing courts, it’s accessible to everyone.

Grab your paddle, find a court, and start enjoying one of the fastest-growing sports in the country!
