Mindhunter Season 3

Listen to Podcast:

People often ask us about Mindhunter and if it will ever come back for a Mindhunter season 3 on Netflix. The cast and crew have all said that they want the show to come back at some point, but Netflix hasn’t made a decision yet.

Here’s a summary of what we know about Mindhunter season 3 as of 2023, based on all the information we have. In case you didn’t know, Mindhunter is one of the best shows on Netflix. It’s about two FBI agents who start a new unit within the Bureau to study some of the most notorious killers in history.

Check out our guide for a full rundown of what happened in Mindhunter season 2. This blog post will give you all the information you need to know about Mindhunter season 3.

What Would Mindhunter Season 3 Have been about?

Andrew Dominick, who was in charge of Mindhunter season 2, has said what Mindhunter Season 3 would have been about if it had been made.

Dominick told Collider, “They were going to go to Hollywood for Mindhunter season 3. So one of them was going out with Jonathan Demme and the other was going out with Michael Mann. And it was all going to be about making sure that profiling got into the zeitgeist or public mind.

“It would’ve been… Everyone was really looking forward to that season when they “got out of the basement and started.”

Also, the BTK killer was a recurring plot point in the first two seasons, so we think it would come up again if the show ever came back. The first and Mindhunter season 2 are both now available on Netflix.

Why We Don’t Have Mindhunter Season 3 Yet?

Mindhunter was a great show for people who like true crime and stories about serial killers. But it didn’t get the number of viewers Netflix needs to keep an expensive show like that going.

Additionally, David Fincher, an executive producer, showrunner, and director for the show, is tied up in a lot of other Netflix content creation. Netflix told Vulture, “David is focused on directing his first Netflix movie, Mank, and making the second season of Love, Death, and Robots. He might come back to Mindhunter in the future, but he didn’t want to keep the actors from getting other jobs while he worked on his own projects.

While we would have loved to see Mindhunter Season 3 greenlit immediately, Executive Producer David Fincher is aware of the reality of the business. He said, “Listen, it was a very expensive show for how many people watched it. We talked about saying, “Finish Mank and then see how you feel,” but I honestly don’t think we’ll be able to do it for less than I did in season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic: “Dollars have to equal eyes.” He also said that he was tired after the first two seasons. He already has a lot on his plate, so he can’t let one project wear him out.

However, the actors are ready to make another season. Jonathan Groff said of Fincher, “As soon as he says he wants to do another one, I’ll be there in a second. But I believe in his vision and instincts, so I always leave it in his hands.”

When will Mindhunter Season 3 Drop on Netflix?

As it is, the details of when Mindhunter season 3 is dropping are very much unknown at the moment. At least for now, they will stay that way, because it seems like David Fincher doesn’t have the time or energy to keep the show going. Don’t worry, Mindhunter hasn’t been officially canceled by Netflix. Instead, the show is on what Netflix calls an “indefinite hiatus.” That means Fincher might “revisit” the series again in the future.

As the infamously detail-oriented director was promoting his now Oscar-nominated Netflix film Mank, Fincher told Vulture part of the reason Mindhunter season 3 hasn’t materialized is that the show is simply too taxing on him. “It’s a 90-hour work week,” he explained. “It takes over your whole life. When Mindhunter season 2 was over, I was pretty worn out, and I told myself, “I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.”

Though he didn’t offer a definitive “no,” Fincher went on to say that the Mindhunter season 3 “probably” wouldn’t happen, noting that on top of the time-suck of doing it, the show is also a pricey production that isn’t exactly breaking any viewership records. “Listen, it was a pricey show for how many people watched it. I really don’t think we’ll be able to do it for less than I did in the Mindhunter season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars having to equal eyeballs.”

And if that news isn’t grim enough, the filmmaker has also been busy lining up even more directorial gigs in the interim, having already gone into pre-production on The Killer for Paramount Pictures — which likely means at least another year will pass before Fincher even considers a Mindhunter return.

Mindhunter Season 3 Release Date

The time between seasons one and two was so long that we’re wondering if we have to wait another year or two to see season three.

And maybe the answer is yes. The reason is David is currently busy working on his new upcoming film called Mank, a biopic on famed screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz. And also, with the talks with social media, Jonathan Groff said that the making of Mindhunter season 3 is currently on hold. We’ll look for it after a while.

The expected time for Mindhunter season 3 is so long for now. We can expect it to be done by the end of 2023, or it could take longer and be done next season.

The Possibility of Mindhunter Season 3 and Beyond

The prospect of Mindhunter Season 3 has been a tantalizing possibility for fans ever since the show went off the air. Recently, rumors have been swirling that the show may be coming back soon with its original director David Fincher returning. According to an insider close to the streaming site, Netflix is discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season.

While it’s still very early days, Fincher sounds more upbeat about the possibility of a third season and beyond. There is no confirmation yet if Mindhunter will return for its third season, but fans are eagerly waiting to hear more news as they hope to see the story of serial killers and their impact on the human psyche continue with Mindhunter Season 3.

Mindhunter Season 3 Plot: What will Happen?

Serial killers are a big part of each season of Mindhunter, but the main characters also have their own problems that will be explored in future episodes. The murder of a child that Bill Tench’s son Brian saw happen in the middle of season two is a plot twist that will have big effects on season three.

Even though he didn’t do anything to kill the boy, he kept the murder a secret. He didn’t tell his parents or run for help when the boy was killed. Brian also said that the boy’s dead body should be hung on a cross, presumably to try to bring him back to life.

Just like in real life, the effects of this trauma aren’t so easy to fix, and Brian’s growing isolation in the weeks that followed makes it clear that these events will still have an effect on Bill and the rest of the Tench family in season three as well.

McCallany told The Wrap when asked about Bill’s tense relationships with his wife Nancy and son Brian, “Those scenes were based on my own dad. He belonged to that time. Bill is an absent father in some of the same ways that his father was.”

At the end of Mindhunter season 2, the FBI agent goes home and finds that he and his partner have left.

His father was Michael McAloney, who won a Tony Award for putting on the Broadway show Borstal Boy in 1970. But the Mindhunter actor said that Michael’s life was like Bill’s in that he was always being pulled in two different directions.

Who Could be in the Cast for a Mindhunter Season 3?

If Mindhunter season 3 is ordered, the following actors might be able to come back.

  • Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford
  • Holt McCallany as Bill Tench
  • Anna Torv as Dr Wendy Carr
  • Stacey Roca as Nancy Tench
  • Joe Tuttle as Greg Smith
  • Michael Cerveris as Ted Gunn
  • Cameron Britton as Ed Kemper
  • Sonny Valicenti as Dennis Rader/ADT Serviceman/BTK

Jonathan Groff, who played Holden Ford, Holt McCallany, who played Bill Tench, and Anna Torv, who played Wendy Carr, have been let out of their contracts so that Fincher can work on other projects. If he came back to Mindhunter in the future. He might still be able to get his main cast back together. But he would have to work around their schedules and any other acting jobs they have.

Stacey Roca, who plays Bill’s wife Nancy Tench and was made a series regular for season two, Joe Tuttle, who plays Greg Smith, and Michael Cerveris, who plays Ted Gunn, the new head of the Behavioral Science Unit, could also come back.

Fingers crossed for more of the show’s horrifying serial killers, like Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton), Montie Rissell (Sam Strike), and Jerry Brudos, who were all played by Cameron Britton (Happy Anderson). We also think we would have seen more of Sonny Valicenti as Dennis Rader. The BTK serial killer turned out to be an ADT serviceman.

While it’s unknown what the exact plot of season three will be, there are some common themes that are likely to continue from past seasons.

Fans can expect a more psychological exploration of the motivations and backgrounds of serial killers. As well as a look at the FBI’s attempts to solve these cases. Additionally, viewers may get to see a focus on the impact of these heinous crimes on the human psyche. All in all, whatever Mindhunter season 3 brings, fans should be prepared for an intense and thought-provoking ride.

The Impact of Serial Killers on the Human Psyche

Serial killers have a long and complex history, one that has had a major impact on the human psyche. From the infamous Jack the Ripper to the more recent Ted Bundy, serial killers have left an indelible mark on society. Why Mindhunter Season 3 is Still Very Much in Demand?

Aside from our morbid interest in murder and mayhem. The Mindhunter season 3 is still very popular because there were so many serial killers in the 1980s and 1990s that Ford and Tench never got to investigate. Between 1984 and 1985, Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, killed 14 people. Ramirez never had a set way of doing things, from the people he killed to the weapons he used.

Ford and Tench would have found his case interesting. The Sunset Strip Killers made up of Douglas Daniel Clark and Carol M. Bundy, were another group that scared people in Los Angeles in the 1980s. Their horrible crimes would have been just as interesting to watch as it would have been for them to start finding clues about Jeffrey Dahmer, who was also on the loose at the same time.

Andrew Dominik, who directed several episodes of Mindhunter season 2, told Collider that in a third season. The first FBI profilers would have gone to Hollywood. The change of setting from the dark and dreary basement to the glamorous world of Hollywood would have definitely been a visual delight, especially in the hands of Finch.

Should Mindhunter Fans Give Up Hope?

The Mindhunter season 3 of the crime TV show could be based on any number of real-life serial killers. With the help of FBI agents Holden Ford, played by Jonathan Groff, and Bill Tench, played by Holt McCallany, they still have too many cases to investigate with the help of their teammate Wendy Carr, the psychologist played by Anna Torv.

Also, if the fans remember correctly, David Fincher initially had plans to make five seasons of the crime thriller.

Where is Mindhunter Season 2 Filmed?

Even though Holt and Tench have to go all over the United States to talk to serial killers, most of the show is shot in and around one American city. Most of season two of Mindhunter was shot in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In Pittsburgh’s 31st Street Studios, sets were built to look like places like the FBI Academy and Holden’s apartment.

A number of Pennsylvanian locations used in the first series are expected to return in the second. These include the Washington and Jefferson College, The George Washington Hotel, the Oaks Theatre, Carnegie Mellon University, and the former State Correctional Institution in Greensburg.

David Fincher, the producer of Mindhunter, told the Post Gazette, “We went looking for a place that could give us a lot of different looks: flat lands, farms, downtowns, urban areas under bridges, and we all ended up in Pittsburgh.”

When we went to McKeesport, the entire street looked like it was 1978. It was just a lucky break.”

Mindhunter Ending Explained

In the end, Wayne Bertram Williams, the primary suspect in the murder of at least 28 children gets charged with two murder cases. With this, the FBI closes the case due to a lack of evidence. Holden and Bill get a reward in the form of a private plane ride.

Still, the way the DA closes the case makes Holden feel uneasy, and he has a feeling that he could have done more. Bill comes home finding his wife Nancy has left the house with Brian. The final episode ends with the BTK strangler continuing his wicked dressing and feeling himself against a rope tied around his neck.
