Max Extra Member Add-On: Share Your Account Legally for $7.99

Max Extra Member Add-On

Warner Bros. Discovery is officially joining the growing list of major streaming companies cracking down on password-sharing outside households. The company has announced a new feature for its streaming service, Max, called the Extra Member Add-On, aimed at creating a more controlled and monetizable sharing experience.

Launched in the U.S. on Tuesday, April 23, this feature represents a significant policy shift in how Max manages account access — and follows in the footsteps of Netflix and Disney+, both of which have already begun charging users for shared accounts.

What Is the Max ‘Extra Member’ Add-On?

The Extra Member Add-On is a new subscription feature that allows Max users to legally share their account with someone outside their household — for $7.99 per month. This extra member will get their own login credentials and an individual adult profile while retaining access to Max’s full content library.

This move is not about creating multiple profiles within a household (which is already available), but specifically about monetizing account access by people in different locations who previously may have been freeloading under the primary user’s login.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the feature is designed to bring “greater flexibility” to users who want to share content with someone else but without violating Max’s terms of service, which previously limited access strictly to a single household.

Why Crack Down on Password Sharing?

For years, account sharing has been a loosely enforced norm among streaming services. However, with subscription growth slowing and production costs climbing, services are looking for new ways to increase revenue.

  • Netflix set the tone in mid-2023, when it introduced its paid-sharing model globally, charging $7.99/month per extra member in the U.S. That move, although initially controversial, ended up boosting Netflix’s revenue and paid memberships, according to their Q3 2023 earnings report.
  • Disney+ followed shortly after, implementing its own restrictions on account sharing along with an option to add extra members for a fee — starting in Canada in late 2023 and rolling out to other regions in 2024.

Max is the latest to follow suit, recognizing that millions of users globally access streaming platforms without directly paying. The Extra Member Add-On is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategy to close this revenue gap while offering a smooth experience for users who wish to comply.

How the Max Extra Member Add-On Works

Here’s a detailed breakdown of how the system functions:

Feature Details
Price $7.99/month (flat, across all subscription tiers)
Eligibility Available only to direct Max subscribers (not bundle subscribers)
Device Limit One stream at a time per Extra Member
Login Access Separate email, password, and profile from primary account
Watch History Option to transfer viewing history and preferences from primary
Geographic Restriction Extra Member must be in the same country as the primary account holder
Limit Only one extra member allowed per account

The new feature is targeted primarily at people sharing logins with friends, partners, or family members who live in separate households. Warner Bros. Discovery is offering a profile transfer tool that makes the migration seamless — moving your watchlist, history, and personalized recommendations to the new, standalone extra member profile.

Official Statement from Warner Bros. Discovery

JB Perrette, President and CEO of Global Streaming & Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasized the user-centric benefits of the update:

“Extra Member Add-On and Profile Transfer are two key Max advancements, designed to help viewers with a new way to enjoy our best-in-class content at an exceptional value… These updates provide a simple way for subscribers to add-on a new member to their account, or for existing subscribers who have users outside of their household to smoothly transition their profile.”

Perrette highlighted that this change is about offering more control and flexibility rather than penalizing users, aiming to maintain account continuity without disruption.

Content Access for Extra Members

An Extra Member receives full access to Max’s premium library, which includes top-tier content from:

  • HBO Originals like The Last of Us, Euphoria, Succession, The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, and The Penguin.
  • Max Originals such as Hacks, Duster (premiering May 15), and Conan O’Brien Must Go (Season 2 coming May 8).
  • Warner Bros. Pictures blockbuster films, including Barbie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two.
  • Classic favorites like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and The Sopranos.

This ensures that even those using the add-on will have a full, uninterrupted entertainment experience — but with proper billing and separation.

Strategic Background: A Common Industry Trend

Max’s policy shift is not surprising given that streaming services face mounting pressure to remain profitable amid rising content costs. As original content becomes more expensive and subscriber numbers plateau in mature markets like the U.S., password-sharing revenue losses are too significant to ignore.

According to a report by Parks Associates, U.S. streaming services could lose over $2.5 billion annually due to unauthorized password sharing. That number is projected to rise to $3.5 billion by 2026 if unchecked.

Netflix’s success with its crackdown likely influenced Warner Bros. Discovery’s timing. Netflix reported a record surge in new subscribers following its global implementation of paid sharing, signaling consumer acceptance of the change when framed with added value.

The launch of the Max Extra Member Add-On marks a pivotal shift in Warner Bros. Discovery’s monetization strategy. With streaming competition at an all-time high, this change allows the company to recapture lost revenue while providing users with a legal, flexible way to share access.

For subscribers, it means more clarity, better personalization, and continued enjoyment of world-class content — now without worrying about violating account policies. For Warner Bros. Discovery, it’s a step toward long-term streaming profitability.

Whether you’re a solo viewer or part of a household of movie lovers, Max is clearly signaling that the era of free password-sharing is coming to an end — but it’s offering a pathway forward with convenience and structure.
