Arshdeep Kulkarni Etches Name in IPL History with Rare Golden Duck on Debut.
In a bittersweet moment for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), all-rounder Arshdeep Kulkarni etched his name in the annals of Indian Premier League (IPL) history, becoming just the second player to be dismissed for a golden duck as an opener.
The 24-year-old Kulkarni, who was part of India’s squad for the U-19 World Cup, made his much-anticipated IPL debut on Tuesday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
However, his dream debut turned into a nightmarish experience in the blink of an eye.
Facing Mumbai Indians’ Nuwan Thushara in the opening over of LSG’s innings, Kulkarni found himself trapped in front of the stumps by a 137.9 kph outswinger, departing for a golden duck on his very first ball in the IPL.
As Kulkarni trudged back to the pavilion, a mix of emotions lingered in the air. While Thushara celebrated his maiden IPL wicket with unbridled joy, the debutant Kulkarni faced the harsh reality of a dream debut cut short.
In an unwanted record, Kulkarni joined a select club of players who have been dismissed for a golden duck while opening the batting in the IPL.
The only other player to share this ignominious distinction is England’s Joe Denly, who was dismissed for a golden duck by Ishant Sharma while opening for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019.
Despite the early setback, LSG showed resilience and determination to bounce back. Captain KL Rahul (28 runs) and Marcus Stoinis (35 runs) stitched a crucial 58-run partnership, laying the foundation for the chase of 145 runs.
While Rahul and Stoinis fell to the guile of Hardik Pandya and Mohammad Nabi, respectively, Nicholas Pooran’s composed innings guided LSG to a hard-fought victory, their sixth win of the season.
With this victory, LSG moved up to the third spot in the IPL standings, accumulating 12 points from 10 matches. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians remained rooted at the bottom of the table with just six points from 12 games.
While Kulkarni’s golden duck may have been a bitter pill to swallow, the young all-rounder’s IPL journey has only just begun.
As he learns from this experience, he will undoubtedly look to bounce back stronger and contribute to LSG’s quest for glory in the remainder of the tournament.
