Meet 7 Legendary Managers Still Shaping International Football

Famous Managers International Football Still Working

The world of football moves at a rapid pace. One year, you have the opportunity to challenge yourself against some of the most brilliant minds in the world of sports, competing in the prestigious Premier League and Champions League.

Before you know it, your agent is urging you to consider offers from countries that may be unfamiliar to you.

While perusing the extensive Wikipedia list of active international football managers, we were reminded of names that had slipped our minds for quite some time. It’s interesting how guys can simply mention old football players and instantly have a great time.

Now, let’s dive right in and examine seven well-known managers who have transitioned to relatively low-profile positions in international football.

1. Terry Connor

Describing Connor as a famous manager might be a bit of a stretch, considering his limited experience in the dugout. He only took charge of 13 matches for Wolves after Mick McCarthy’s sacking in 2012.

That period is most notable for Connor appearing deeply troubled by Wolves’ inevitable relegation. The former striker later joined McCarthy as an assistant coach at Ipswich Town, and then followed him to the Republic of Ireland, APOEL, Cardiff City, and Blackpool.

After his previous disappointing experience at Molineux, Connor found himself back in the role of head coach, this time at Grenada.

The West Indies nation is currently ranked 174 in the FIFA Rankings, positioned between St Vincent and the Grenadines and Nepal. Connor has yet to secure a victory in the five matches he has overseen, with their most recent game resulting in a 4-0 defeat to Suriname.

2. Thomas Christiansen

Many people may recall the former Spain international as one of the numerous managers who led Leeds United during their 16-year absence from the Premier League.

He had a promising start at Elland Road, but unfortunately, he ended up losing his job after only eight months in charge. After a brief period at Belgian club Union SG, he has now established himself in Panama.

Christiansen has been leading the Central American nation for four years now. He has been in charge for more than 50 matches and has a respectable 49% win rate. His peak came when he guided them to the Nations League final four last year.

Lee Bowyer, a former player for Leeds, is currently involved in international football as the manager of Montserrat.

3. Avram Grant

Remembering the moment when John Terry missed that penalty against Manchester United, it seems like a distant memory, doesn’t it?

The Israeli coach has held a diverse range of positions since guiding Portsmouth and West Ham to relegations. These include stints at Partizan Belgrade, Ghana, and the Indian Super League team NorthEast United.

Since 2022, he has taken charge of Zambia and successfully guided them to qualify for the most recent Africa Cup of Nations. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to secure a victory in the group stage and were subsequently eliminated.

4. Dick Advocaat

Advocaat, a seasoned champion with PSV, Rangers, and Zenit Saint Petersburg, continues to stay active despite being in his seventies.

The Dutchman has held a total of eight different positions since his departure from Sunderland in 2015. He has managed teams in various countries, including his native Netherlands, where he even had a brief stint with the national team in 2017. Additionally, he has also taken charge of Iraq and now the Caribbean nation of Curacao.

Now there’s a person who fearlessly embraces a one-of-a-kind challenge.

5. Hector Cuper

The Argentinian has an impressive CV, having worked with top clubs such as Valencia, Inter, and Real Betis. His defensive football style, known as catenaccio, may not have been popular with many, but it surprisingly led Valencia to consecutive Champions League finals.

In the past decade, Cuper has had a diverse career, leading teams in Turkey, Dubai, Egypt, Uzbekistan, DR Congo, and now Syria.

6. Heimir Hallgrimsson

We haven’t verified this, but it seems highly likely that Hallgrimsson is the only person on this list who is both a football manager and a dentist.

The former defender has gained significant recognition for his impressive five-year tenure leading Iceland. This period was highlighted by their memorable triumph over England at Euro 2016, as well as their remarkable qualification for the 2018 World Cup.

He stepped down after their disappointing performance in the group stage in Russia and then spent a considerable amount of time playing for Qatar Stars League club Al-Arabi.

Since September 2022, he has taken charge of Jamaica and has achieved a record of seven wins, seven draws, and seven defeats from his 21 matches in charge. That’s quite an interesting mix, isn’t it?

Jamaica, under Hallgrimsson’s leadership, will be taking part in the Copa America tournament in the United States this summer. In the group stage, they have been placed in the same group as Mexico, Venezuela, and Ecuador.

7. Paulo Bento

The manager, who has previously worked with Sporting, Portugal, and South Korea, is currently leading the United Arab Emirates team.

Under Bento’s leadership, they achieved victories against Hong Kong, a draw with Palestine, and faced a defeat against Iran during the group stage of the Asian Cup in January. In the Round of 16, they played against Tajikistan and ended up with a 1-1 draw. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure a victory in the penalty shootout.
