Several channels owned by Paramount Global, including CBS, Comedy Central, and MTV, could soon disappear from YouTube TV if the two companies fail to reach a new contract agreement.
The deadline for the renewal is set for Thursday, and without a deal, the affected channels will go dark tonight.
YouTube TV and Paramount Struggle to Reach Agreement
YouTube TV, owned by Alphabet (Google’s parent company), has informed its customers that it is working hard to secure a fair deal with Paramount. Despite ongoing negotiations, both sides have yet to finalize an agreement.
“YouTube TV is in active discussions with Paramount and is hopeful that an agreement can be reached,” the company stated. However, if no deal is made, the channels will be removed from the streaming service.
On the other hand, Paramount claims that YouTube TV is pushing for unfair and one-sided terms. The company has emphasized that it is offering a “comprehensive deal” to continue its partnership with YouTube TV.
“Paramount has a long track record of successfully renewing agreements with major distributors,” a Paramount spokesperson told media, adding that the company remains committed to securing a new deal.
What This Means for YouTube TV Subscribers?
If Paramount’s channels become unavailable for an extended period, YouTube TV subscribers will be eligible for an $8 credit, which they can claim through the platform’s website.
YouTube TV is also advising users to switch to Paramount+ if they want to continue watching CBS and other affected channels.
A Repeat of Past Disputes
This is not the first time YouTube TV has faced such a situation. In 2021, a dispute with Disney resulted in the temporary removal of its channels for two days before an agreement was reached.
The latest issue comes at a time when YouTube TV recently increased its monthly subscription price by $10, bringing the cost of its basic package to $82.99 per month. The service currently has around 8 million subscribers, making it the largest internet-based pay-TV provider, ahead of competitors like DirecTV Stream and Fubo.
What’s Next?
As negotiations continue, it remains uncertain whether Paramount and YouTube TV will reach a last-minute deal. If they fail, millions of YouTube TV subscribers could lose access to some of their favorite channels, forcing them to look for alternative streaming options.
