Listen to the Podcast:
The wait for Black Summer season 2 took over two years, and Netflix now continues to make us wait on the future of the Z Nation prequel season 3. We would hope to see a Black Summer season 3, but with little to no news, poor statistics heavily suggest there may not be a future for Black Summer on Netflix.
Black Summer is a Netflix Original horror series created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams and is the prequel to the incredible zany zombie series Z-Nation.
The second season of Black Summer was a significant improvement upon the first. If there’s one thing that Black Summer continues to do well, it is to ensure that every encounter with zombies is frightening and confrontations with other survivors are nerve-wracking and tense.
Black Summer Season 3 Renewal Status
The official status of renewal: Pending
It has been a very long eighteen months since the second season of Black Summer aired. We have not heard any news about a third season yet. Season 2 had few viewers when it first aired, but it grew greatly by the end. This could be what drives more attention toward it. Despite only garnering recognition from countries such as America and Britain, where English is spoken primarily, Season 2 had amazing zombie encounters that were both eerie and thrilling — making for a captivating watch indeed.

Black Summer Season 3 Possible Release Date
The first season of ‘Black Summer’ premiered on Netflix on April 11, 2019. Netflix had remained quiet regarding the show’s future for several months, despite the positive audience reception when it arrived on the platform. Some people speculated that the series would no longer return since the last episode has pretty much wrapped up the story, but they were wrong. In November 2019, Netflix officially announced that season 2 is happening.
Unfortunately, we had to wait for two years before getting a follow-up season. The production has also suffered setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, in June 2021, ‘Black Summer’ season 2 arrived.
Based on that timeline, it’s safe to say that a third season of ‘Black Summer’ will not be here until early in 2023. Hopefully, with the Covid-19 restrictions slowly getting lifted, the production will run smoothly, and we will see ‘Black Summer’ back sooner than the last season.

Black Summer Season 3 Plot
Unlike Season 1, which answered all its questions as it came to a close, Season 2 has a lot of cliffhangers. Season 2 centred around the survivors getting to the airstrip. They planned to onboard the plane that was dropping supplies around there and get somewhere safe.
Only Sun, of all the survivors that got to the airstrip, managed to board the plane. Black Summer Season 3 should answer if Sun got somewhere safe.
The fate of Rose and Anna also remains to be seen. After Rose injured her leg, Anna chose to stick with her, and now the two of them need to figure out what to do with the plane gone. Rose is losing motivation to survive the apocalypse. Anna, however, is strong as ever and determined to survive. Will Anna be able to take Rose over the top to survive, or will Rose not make it through? This is another question that will need to be answered.

Jaime King Shared Ideas for Black Summer Season 3
King previously spoke to Express.co.uk about what she personally wants to see happen if the tv show continues for a third season.
“I have a few ideas,” King said. “I’m excited to get the writer’s room going again. This is the kind of series that could go on forever, but I think it would be really powerful to do it in just three seasons, if possible.”
“What do you do when there are no more commodities left? Exploring that idea,” she added. King shared more thoughts in another interview with Comic Book.
“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this. Hypothetically speaking, I would center it on different chapters where we are exploring sort of three central figures in different places. But that’s — I don’t know, sketches,” she teased.

Some Hope for Black Summer Fans
Despite everything, King did speak fondly of the show in an interview with Express that came out a few months after the season 2 premiere. She said she had ideas for where the show could go in the third season and was “excited to get the writer’s room going again,” adding that Black Summer “is the kind of series that could go on forever, but I think it would be really powerful to do it in just three seasons, if possible.”
So not all bad news! It sounds like King still has a stake in the show, so the movie casting news shouldn’t alarm anyone too much. For now, all we can do is rewatch the show and wait for Netflix to make a definitive announcement one way or another.
