At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Léon Marchand, a junior swimmer from Arizona State University, achieved the greatest single-day performance in swimming history by winning two gold medals in just two hours. Marchand, who swims for his home country, France, became the first swimmer since 1976 to achieve such a feat.

The evening began with the 200-meter butterfly, where Marchand executed an incredible comeback. For the majority of the race, Hungary’s Kristof Malik, the defending Olympic champion and world-record holder, led.
However, in the final stages, Marchand surged ahead, finishing with a time of 1:51.21, just ahead of Malik’s 1:51.75. This victory not only earned him a gold medal but also set a new Olympic record, his second of the Games following his performance in the 400-meter individual medley.
The triumph electrified the French crowd and drew a reaction from the French president, Emmanuel Macron. “Dream merchant! Second GOLD medal for our Léon after an anthology race. National and Olympic records have been broken. Congratulations!” Macron wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Podium Glory and College Connection
Joining Marchand on the podium was his college teammate, Ilya Kharun from Canada, who secured the bronze with a time of 1:52.80. Although Marchand will not return to Arizona State University next fall, Kharun will continue with coach Herbie Behm.
Dominating the 200-Meter Breaststroke
Less than two hours after his first gold medal, Marchand competed in the 200-meter breaststroke. This time, there was no need for a comeback, as he dominated the race from start to finish, winning with a time of 2:05.85 and setting another Olympic record. He outpaced Australia’s defending champion, Zac Stubblety-Cook, marking his third Olympic record in Paris.
This remarkable performance made Marchand the first swimmer in Olympic history to win both the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter breaststroke in the same Games.
A Legacy of Excellence
Marchand’s achievement adds to the legacy of Arizona State University’s swimming program. Before him, the only Sun Devil to win three gold medals was Melissa Belote Ripley at the 1972 Munich Olympics. In an interview with The Arizona Republic, Belote Ripley hesitated to compare Marchand to Michael Phelps but ultimately acknowledged his extraordinary talent. I believe he’s a better athlete and swimmer than (Michael) Phelps. He’s so much more well-rounded. Phelps is an amazing and fabulous athlete. Léon can swim anywhere. He just swims. He’s an unbelievable talent,” she stated.
