On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted on a resolution declaring, “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” John Adams believed July 2 was the appropriate date for the celebration and reportedly declined invitations to July 4 events in protest.

For historical context, Rhode Island was the first colony to renounce allegiance to Great Britain, declaring independence by a legislative act on May 4, 1776.

The Evolution of a National Holiday

The U.S. Congress initially made it a federal holiday in 1870. However, in 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees. Despite becoming a federal holiday in 1941, Americans have celebrated Independence Day since the nation’s birth.

Fireworks and Early Celebrations

The tradition of fireworks began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777. The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported, “At night, there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with 13 rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.” The Sons of Liberty also set off fireworks over Boston Common that night.

In Rhode Island, celebrations were notable as well. Mary Gould Almy, a British sympathizer in Newport, wrote in her diary about the gun salutes fired across the state. This tradition of fireworks and public celebrations has continued ever since.

First Bristol Fourth of July parade

Bristol, Rhode Island, is the oldest Independence Day celebration in the country. In 1785, Rev. Henry Wight of the First Congregational Church and a soldier in the Revolution organized “Patriotic Exercises” in Bristol, asking the town to remember veterans and appreciate the new nation. This marked the first Bristol Fourth of July celebration, which continues today.

With Macy’s 4th of July fireworks returning to the Hudson River for the first time in a decade, Hoboken will be a prime viewing location. Officials expect hundreds of thousands of people to gather on the waterfront to view the display.

Road closures and mass transit usage are planned to manage the crowd. Spectators can view the fireworks from various public locations along the waterfront, including Maxwell Park, Elysian Park, Sinatra Park, the Little League field, and Pier A Park.

While coolers and lawn chairs are welcome, grills, tents, weapons, and fireworks are restricted.

Road Closures in Hoboken on July 4th:

  • Beginning at midnight: Sinatra Drive from Fourth Street to 11th Street.
  • Beginning at 2 p.m.: Various sections of Sinatra Drive, Hudson Place, and nearby streets.
  • Beginning at 9 p.m.: Specific streets, including Third and 16th Street.

Parking restrictions and special rates for residents with permits are also in effect, along with event rates for garages to accommodate visitors. Specific locations, such as Pier C Park and the Stevens Institute of Technology campus, will be closed to the public.

Safety and Security Measures

Enhanced patrols will be deployed, with officers positioned to monitor festivities and address emergencies. A mobile command center will provide amplified security measures.

NJ Transit rail and bus services, Port Authority PATH trains, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on adjusted schedules. NY Waterway will also run a limited schedule.

The Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert and Fireworks

The Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert and Fireworks will return to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. The event will feature performances by Grammy-winning artists Ne-Yo and Kesha, with a fireworks display following the concert.
