Team India Stranded in Barbados Amid Hurricane Beryl Lockdown: Airport Closure Delays Departure

Team India Barbados Hurricane Beryl Lockdown (1)

The World Cup-winning Indian cricket team has found itself stranded in Barbados after a Category 4 hurricane named Hurricane Beryl hit the Caribbean islands.

The cyclone has brought the region, including Bridgetown, to a standstill, forcing the closure of the leading international airport and imposing a lockdown across the island.

The Impact of Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl, with its strong winds and torrential rain, has wreaked havoc in Barbados and neighboring islands since Sunday.

The storm has led to widespread disruption, including the interruption of electricity and water supplies. The situation has been further exacerbated by the lockdown imposed by the authorities to ensure the safety of the residents and visitors.

Team India’s Predicament

The Indian cricket team, fresh from their ICC T20 World Cup victory over South Africa, has been caught amid this natural disaster. The team, along with support staff, BCCI officials, and players’ families, has been confined to their hotel in Barbados as they await further instructions.

The squad was scheduled to depart for India, but the airport’s closure has delayed their travel plans indefinitely.

BCCI’s Response

Speaking to reporters, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who accompanies the team, confirmed the situation. “Like you, we are also stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation,” Shah was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. Shah emphasized that the priority is the safety of the players and the entire entourage.

The Journey to the World Cup Victory

In the tournament’s final match, India won the toss and opted to bat first. Despite a shaky start that reduced them to 34/3, a resilient partnership between Virat Kohli (76) and Axar Patel (47 in 31 balls) restored India’s position. A subsequent 57-run stand between Kohli and Shivam Dube (27 in 16 balls) helped India post a competitive total of 176/7 in their 20 overs.

South Africa’s response saw a similar struggle, with the team reduced to 12/2 early on. However, a 58-run partnership between Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) brought them back into the game.

Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive 52 in 27 balls threatened to tilt the game in South Africa’s favor. Nonetheless, stellar performances by Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh (2/18), Jasprit Bumrah (2/20), and Hardik Pandya (3/20) ensured India secured the victory, restricting South Africa to 169/8.

The Road Ahead

The current lockdown and airport closure have left Team India and other travelers in a state of uncertainty. The BCCI is exploring multiple options to ensure the team’s safe return.

“There was a charter flight we were trying for Monday, but the airport is shut, so that option is gone. We are in touch with multiple charter operators, but it all depends on the airport operations,” a source told PTI. The plan is to fly directly to India with a refueling stop in the US or Europe, contingent on the airport’s reopening.

The authorities are monitoring the weather closely, and the airport is expected to remain shut until Tuesday afternoon. However, this is subject to change based on the weather conditions and wind speeds.

Awaiting a Safe Return

As Team India waits for the situation to improve, their World Cup triumph remains a beacon of hope and resilience. The players and support staff are maintaining their spirits despite the unforeseen delay.

Once the conditions permit, the BCCI ensures all necessary arrangements are in place for a safe and smooth journey back home.

The Indian cricket team’s unexpected delay in Barbados is a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictability. While the team’s World Cup victory brought joy and pride to millions, their current predicament underscores the challenges that can arise even in moments of triumph.

As the situation evolves, the safety and well-being of everyone involved remain the top priority. The cricketing world awaits their safe return to India, where a grand celebration of their victory will follow.
