Oil Spill Incident at Shell Pipeline On Sunday, Singaporean authorities reported that a Shell-owned oil pipeline had started leaking into the sea, causing an oil spill.
The spill originated from a pipeline running between the islands of Bukom and Bukom Kecil, which are known for housing Shell’s major oil refinery. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed the halt of the leak and initiated immediate cleanup operations.
Efforts to contain and clean the spill The MPA swiftly responded to the incident, placing containment booms around the leak site to prevent further spread of the oil. Shell also deployed vessels equipped with dispersants to clean up the oil that had spread into the surrounding waters. To support the efforts, the MPA dispatched equipment and cleanup teams to handle the fuel slick.
Additionally, the MPA activated drones and satellite technology to monitor the spill’s impact in real-time. The MPA has also notified relevant government agencies to report any further oil sightings. Fortunately, by Sunday evening, there had been no new reports of oil sightings, suggesting that the situation was under control.
No impact on shipping routes. In an effort to ensure safety, the MPA issued navigational warnings, advising vessels to avoid the affected area. Despite the spill, the authority confirmed that there was no impact on navigation safety, ensuring that maritime traffic could continue to flow smoothly around the spill zone.
Shell’s Response and Cleanup Operations As of Sunday evening, Shell had not released an official statement regarding the spill. However, the company took immediate action by mobilizing containment and cleanup efforts. The MPA assured the public that they had taken relevant precautions to minimize the environmental impact of the spill.
Previous Oil Spill in Singapore This incident follows a similar oil spill in June, when an accident between a dredger and a stationary bunker vessel at Pasir Panjang port led to the temporary closure of beaches on Sentosa Island. We successfully completed the cleanup operations for that spill last month.
While oil spills pose a significant threat to marine environments, swift action from both Shell and Singaporean authorities helped contain and manage this incident. Continued monitoring and cleanup efforts are in place to ensure minimal environmental impact, and maritime operations in the region remain unaffected.
