Sean Baker has claimed the prestigious Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film award at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards for his film Anora.
This achievement marks a significant moment in Baker’s career and could be a strong indicator of his chances at the upcoming Academy Awards.
“My imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now, as well as my cortisol levels,” Baker admitted in his acceptance speech. He expressed deep gratitude towards his directorial team, cast, crew, and producers Samantha Quan and Alex Coco, acknowledging the immense challenge of making a $6 million film on actual film stock in New York City in 2023. “Almost an impossibility,” he added.
The Impact of Anora and Its Star Cast
Anora tells the story of Ani (played by Mikey Madison), a young woman working in a New York strip club who hastily marries a wealthy young client, only to discover he is the son of a Russian oligarch. As the story unfolds, Ani faces the wrath of his powerful family. The film also features performances by Yura Borisov, Mark Eydelshteyn, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan.
Baker praised Madison’s dedication and performance, stating that working with her has fundamentally changed how he will direct actors in the future. He recalled how her input, even a year before production, helped shape the film. “She has an incredible career ahead,” he predicted.
A Strong Indicator for the Oscars
Winning the DGA’s top honor is historically one of the strongest predictors of who will take home the Best Director Oscar. Out of the last 22 winners of this category at the DGA Awards, 19 have gone on to win the same honor at the Academy Awards. Since the DGA first introduced this award in 1948, only eight winners have failed to claim the Oscar for Best Director.
This year, four of the five DGA nominees—Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown)—also secured nominations for Best Director at the Academy Awards. The only exception was DGA nominee Edward Berger (Conclave), who was replaced by Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) in the Oscar lineup.
Historically, the correlation between DGA and Oscar winners has been strong. In the last four years (2020–2023), four out of the five DGA nominees have matched the Oscar Best Director lineup. Additionally, a Best Picture win at the Academy Awards is often linked to a Best Director nomination—only six films have won Best Picture without a Best Director nod in the history of the Oscars.
Additional Awards Boost Anora’s Chances
Adding to its momentum, Anora recently won Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards, further cementing its status as a serious contender for Oscar night.
With six Oscar nominations, Anora and Sean Baker are poised to make a major impact at the Academy Awards, set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2nd. If history is any guide, Baker’s DGA triumph could be a preview of what’s to come on Hollywood’s biggest night.
