Studies Reveal: Long Covid Affects Millions, Including Kids & Pregnant Individuals

Long Covid Impact Millions Children Pregnant Studies

Many individuals continue to experience symptoms of COVID-19 long after their initial infections. Two recent studies, one focusing on pregnant individuals and the other on children, provide a deeper understanding of the impact of this health issue that medical professionals believe is frequently overlooked.

According to the initial study, 10% of individuals who contract COVID during pregnancy may experience long-term symptoms. The findings were presented on Monday at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in National Harbor, Maryland.

The researchers utilized data from the National Institutes of Health’s Recover Initiative, a project established to investigate the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on adults and children. Out of the 1,503 individuals who were pregnant in the dataset, 9.3% mentioned experiencing symptoms six months or more after being infected. Feeling tired after light physical or mental activity was the most common symptom reported. Some individuals also experienced dizziness.

According to some research, the percentage of pregnant individuals experiencing long-term COVID is relatively low compared to the general US population. Studies vary in their estimates of the percentage of adults who experience long-term COVID, with figures ranging from 2.5% to 25%. The discrepancy in numbers can be attributed to differing definitions of what constitutes “long” COVID. This study does not delve into the reasons behind the differing numbers, but co-author Dr. Torri Metz, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and vice chair of research in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Utah Health, has some theories.

It’s possible that this is due to having fewer underlying medical issues in general. They are more youthful. Perhaps they have a different immune response,” Metz mentioned.

During pregnancy, the immune system tends to be more accepting of foreign substances, allowing the mother’s body to support and care for a fetus with unique genetics.

During pregnancy, individuals may experience more severe symptoms when exposed to a virus due to changes in their immune system’s response. It’s possible that during pregnancy, the body experiences reduced inflammation, which is the immune system’s way of responding to an infection. Several studies have connected extended inflammation following COVID to effects on the brain as well as harm to the lungs and kidneys.

“Perhaps they don’t experience as much damage to the surrounding organs and the subsequent complex consequences,” Metz noted.

People who were pregnant and experienced long-term COVID also had some common factors in common. Individuals with obesity, a diagnosis of chronic anxiety or depression, or who needed supplemental oxygen when ill were more likely to develop long-term COVID.

Regardless of the trimester in which someone contracted COVID, vaccination status did not appear to be a statistically significant factor. Over half of individuals with long-term COVID had received both vaccine doses. Several studies have shown that getting vaccinated reduces the chances of developing severe illness, potentially decreasing the risk of long-term effects from COVID.

According to Metz, the research revealed that socioeconomic factors played a role in long-term COVID numbers.

“I find it worrying that we had a significant number of patients struggling to pay their bills,” she expressed. It’s concerning to think about the level of access people have to the care they require.

According to Dr. Amy Edwards, the study provides valuable insights into the individuals who are at higher risk of developing long-term COVID. She is the associate medical director of pediatric infection control at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and oversees the hospital’s long COVID clinic.

Dealing with long-term stress can have a negative impact on your immune system. According to Edwards, who was not part of the new research, stress can trigger an unhealthy inflammatory response and is commonly linked to chronic stress.

Doctors may find it useful to consider the possibility of long-term COVID if a person who had COVID during pregnancy remains fatigued eight weeks after giving birth, as it may differ from the typical fatigue associated with a newborn.

Researchers emphasize the importance of examining the outcomes of the infants of pregnant individuals who experienced long-term COVID.

Last week, a new study published in the journal Pediatrics examined various research on children and discovered that as many as 6 million have experienced long-term COVID.

According to studies, the majority of young individuals who experienced long-term COVID eventually recovered. However, about one-third of them still had symptoms a year after their initial infection.

Children with long-term COVID may experience symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and fatigue.

It is crucial not to downplay the effects of long-term COVID on children simply because the symptoms frequently go away.

As a teenager, missing two years of formative experience due to long-term COVID would be unimaginable. She expressed reluctance to consider the potential long-term effects of the situation.

The study also revealed that children faced an increased likelihood of certain autoimmune conditions, such as type 1 diabetes, following a COVID infection, even if the symptoms were mild or asymptomatic. According to a study in the US, researchers discovered a 72% higher chance of developing diabetes within six months of an initial infection.

Research has not completely elucidated the common factors among children experiencing long-term COVID. People experiencing housing and food insecurity, along with disrupted access to health care, may see their health worsen due to decreased immune function, according to the new research.

Edwards mentioned that she and other doctors who operate pediatric COVID clinics nationwide have observed a decrease in the number of patients they were seeing during the peak of the pandemic, which she finds encouraging.

However, many young individuals are still experiencing the long-term effects of COVID-19. As a result, the waiting time to get into the clinic has decreased from eight months to about five months.
