Prince William recently made a visit to the Isles of SThe Prince of Wales spoke candidly about his wife, Catherine, who recently received a cancer diagnosis, during his visit to St. Mary’s Community Hospital. He told staff at the hospital that she’s “doing well” following her diagnosis.
Prince William’s visit to the Isles of Scilly was his first official trip since becoming the Duke of Cornwall, a title he holds alongside his Prince of Wales title.
He primarily visited to learn about the construction of a new health and social care facility on Duchy land near the hospital. This new facility is set to improve the range of care provided to the local community and ensure that people can receive care closer to home than having to travel to the mainland.
During his tour of the medical center, Prince William chatted with Tracy Smith, an administrator at St. Mary’s. She shared with reporters that she had asked William about his wife, Kate, and he said, “She’s doing well, thanks.” Smith even suggested that the royal couple might like to come for a visit and bring their children along.
The Prince also received a touching gesture from matron Lynda McHale, who gave him a card for his father, King Charles III, who is also battling cancer, and Catherine. McHale’s granddaughter wrote the card, wishing the King and the Princess of Wales a speedy recovery.
Prince William not only visited the hospital but also took a tour of St. Mary’s Harbour, a facility under the management of the Duchy of Cornwall. The duchy owns much of the Isles of Scilly, as well as nearly a third of the residential buildings.
He met with a gig boat team that recently placed third in the World Pilot Gig Championships, held in Scilly last weekend, during his harbor visit.
The Prince also made a stop at the On the Quay cafe, where he ordered five pasties, but he was quick to clarify that they weren’t all for him! He praised the beautiful weather on the islands and even shared that he had gone for a swim in the sea the day before, wearing a wetsuit.
As he chatted with tourists waiting for boats to take them to various islands, Prince William joked that his family was upset that he was there without them. “My children will kill me if I don’t get back,” he quipped.
It’s worth noting that Prince William’s trip to Cornwall coincides with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s three-day visit to Nigeria.
Overall, it’s heartening to see Prince William taking the time to connect with the local community and share updates about his wife’s health. His visit to the Isles of Scilly underscores the significant efforts made to enhance healthcare accessibility in the area and demonstrates the Duchy of Cornwall’s contribution to the local economy.
