Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025: Full Schedule, Rituals & Significance

Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025

The Jagannath Rath Yatra, also called the Chariot Festival or Shree Gundicha Yatra, is one of the most magnificent and deeply spiritual Hindu festivals celebrated annually in Puri, Odisha. This grand event honors Lord Jagannath—an incarnation of Lord Krishna or Vishnu—along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. It takes place on the Dwitiya Tithi, the second day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar month Ashadha (June–July), a time considered highly auspicious due to the waxing moon’s increasing brightness.

Puri Rath Yatra 2025: Date and Timings

In 2025, the Rath Yatra will be observed on Friday, June 27. According to Drik Panchang, the Dwitiya Tithi begins at 1:24 PM on June 26 and ends at 11:19 AM on June 27, marking the spiritually ideal period for the festival’s main events. The timing is significant because the festival is traditionally held when the moon is waxing, symbolizing growth, prosperity, and spiritual awakening.

The Nine-Day Festival Schedule

The Rath Yatra is not a single-day event but a vibrant nine-day festival filled with rituals and celebrations:

  • Anavasara (June 13 – June 26, 2025): A period when the deities are kept away from public view for rest and rejuvenation after the previous year’s festivities.

  • Gundicha Marjana (June 26, 2025): The ceremonial cleaning of the Gundicha Temple, the destination of the chariot procession.

  • Rath Yatra (June 27, 2025): The main chariot festival day when the deities are taken out of the Jagannath Temple and pulled on massive chariots to the Gundicha Temple.

  • Hera Panchami (July 1, 2025): A ritual where Goddess Lakshmi visits the Gundicha Temple to meet Lord Jagannath.

  • Bahuda Yatra (July 4, 2025): The return journey of the deities from the Gundicha Temple back to the Jagannath Temple.

  • Niladri Bijay (July 5, 2025): The concluding ritual where the chariots are dismantled, symbolizing the end of the divine journey and the anticipation of the next year’s festival.

Historical and Mythological Significance

The origins of the Jagannath Rath Yatra date back to between the 12th and 16th centuries, though references to the festival appear in ancient Hindu scriptures like the Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Skanda Purana, and Kapila Samhita. The festival’s roots are intertwined with legends and historical traditions that have evolved over centuries.

One popular belief is that the festival commemorates Lord Krishna’s visit to his maternal home. According to mythology, Lord Jagannath (Krishna), along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, makes an annual pilgrimage to the Gundicha Temple, which is considered the abode of their aunt (Mausi Maa). This journey symbolizes Krishna’s departure from Gokul to Mathura and his visit to his mother’s house, reflecting familial love and divine grace.

Another legend associates the festival with King Indradyumna, who is said to have established the Jagannath Temple after receiving divine instructions in a dream. The festival gained prominence during the reign of Odisha’s Gajapati dynasty, who patronized the temple and the Rath Yatra, helping it become a powerful symbol of religious devotion and Odishan cultural identity.

The Grand Chariots: Architectural Marvels

The Grand Chariots

Each year, three enormous chariots are constructed anew from specific types of wood such as phassi, dhausa, and neem, sourced traditionally from the forests near the Mahanadi River. These chariots are masterpieces of craftsmanship, built by a hereditary team of carpenters from the former princely state of Dasapalla, who have exclusive rights to this sacred task.

The chariots are:

Chariot Name Jagannath (Lord Krishna) Balabhadra (Brother) Subhadra (Sister)
Chariot Name Nandighosha Taladhwaja Darpadalana
Height 44 feet 2 inches 43 feet 3 inches 42 feet 3 inches
Wheels 16 14 12
Canopy Colors Red and Yellow (Yellow linked to Vishnu) Red and Bluish Green Red and Black (Black linked to Goddess)
Horses’ Colors White Black Red
Charioteer Daruka Matali Arjuna
Flag Name Trailokyamohini Unnani Nadambika
The chariots stand majestically on the Bada Danda, the Grand Avenue leading from the temple’s eastern entrance, known as Singhadwara or Lion’s Gate. Around each chariot are nine subsidiary deities (Parsva Devatas) painted on wooden panels, representing various divine aspects and guardians.

Rituals and Celebrations

The festival is rich with elaborate rituals, each holding deep spiritual meaning:

  • Rath Snana (Sacred Bathing): Before the procession, the deities are bathed with 108 pots of holy water in a ritual that symbolizes purification and renewal.

  • Rath Pratistha (Chariot Consecration): Priests sanctify the newly built chariots by chanting Vedic mantras, invoking divine blessings for the journey.

  • The Rath Yatra Procession: The highlight of the festival, where thousands of devotees gather to pull the massive chariots along the 3-kilometre route from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. This act of pulling the chariots is considered highly auspicious and believed to wash away sins and grant blessings.

  • Stay at Gundicha Temple: The deities reside here for nine days, during which various rituals and celebrations take place.

  • Bahuda Yatra: The return journey to the Jagannath Temple, marked by equally grand celebrations.

  • Niladri Bijay: The dismantling of the chariots, symbolizing the end of the divine sojourn and the promise of the festival’s return next year.

One special ritual during the return journey is the stop near the Mausi Maa Temple, where the deities are offered Poda Pitha, a traditional baked pancake believed to be Lord Jagannath’s favorite.

ISKCON Rath Yatra 2025

The Rath Yatra is celebrated not only in Puri but also globally by devotees of Lord Krishna. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) organizes its own Rath Yatra events, including a major procession in Prayagraj (Allahabad). In 2025, the ISKCON Rath Yatra in Prayagraj will take place on Sunday, June 29 at 4:00 PM. The procession starts from Hira Halwai Crossing, passes through Subhash Chauraha and Hanuman Mandir, and concludes at KP Ground.

This event attracts thousands of devotees who pull the chariots while singing devotional songs and dancing, spreading the message of love, unity, and devotion.

Cultural and Spiritual Impact

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is more than just a festival; it is a profound expression of faith, community, and cultural heritage. It unites people from all walks of life, transcending social and economic barriers. Millions of devotees from India and abroad participate, either physically or spiritually, in this grand spectacle.

The festival embodies the spirit of devotion to Lord Jagannath, who is revered as a universal deity accessible to all, irrespective of caste, creed, or status. The chariot procession symbolizes the journey of life, with its challenges and celebrations, and the divine presence guiding devotees through it.

In essence, the Rath Yatra is a vibrant celebration of life, faith, and the eternal bond between the divine and humanity, making it one of the most significant and beloved festivals in the Hindu calendar.
