The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has outlined new ambitious targets for the Indian cricket team following their recent triumph.
On Saturday, India clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, marking their second victory in the prestigious tournament. The Men in Blue emerged victorious against South Africa by a narrow margin of seven runs in a thrilling final held in Barbados.
Reflections on ODI World Cup 2023
In a statement, Shah reflected on India’s performance in the previous year’s ODI World Cup. Despite a strong campaign where India won all their matches except the final, they fell short against Australia.
“It was the same captain last year and the same here in Barbados. We won all games except the final in 2023, as Australia played better. This time, we worked even harder and played better to win the title,” Shah said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Future Goals: World Test Championship and Champions Trophy
Looking ahead, Shah announced that Team India’s next major targets are to win the World Test Championship final in England and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in 2025.
“I would want India to win all the titles. We have the biggest bench strength; only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if the need arises. The way this team is progressing, we aim to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” Shah added.
The T20 World Cup 2024 Final Recap
The final match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 saw India winning the toss and opting to bat first. The team faced early setbacks, being reduced to 34/3.
However, a crucial counter-attacking partnership between Virat Kohli (76 runs) and Axar Patel (47 runs off 31 balls) added 72 runs, restoring India’s position.
A 57-run stand between Virat and Shivam Dube (27 runs off 16 balls) further strengthened their innings, leading India to 176/7 in 20 overs. South African bowlers Keshav Maharaj (2/23) and Anrich Nortje (2/26) were the standout performers for their team.
In response, South Africa’s chase of 177 runs started poorly, losing two wickets for just 12 runs. However, a 58-run partnership between Quinton de Kock (39 runs) and Tristan Stubbs (31 runs) revived their innings.
Heinrich Klaasen’s half-century (52 runs off 27 balls) posed a significant threat to India. Nevertheless, Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh (2/18), Jasprit Bumrah (2/20), and Hardik Pandya (3/20) executed a brilliant comeback in the death overs, restricting South Africa to 169/8 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding performance.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the celebration, the team faced an unexpected challenge post-victory. Due to a hurricane warning, the team has been stranded in Barbados and is currently staying at the Hilton Hotel.
This unforeseen circumstance has delayed their return but has not dampened the spirits of the players and the management.
With the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory ending India’s over 10-year ICC trophy drought since the 2013 Champions Trophy, the focus now shifts to achieving new milestones.
Jay Shah’s declaration sets a clear and ambitious path for the team, emphasizing the importance of consistent performance and aiming for glory in the upcoming World Test Championship and Champions Trophy.
The journey ahead is filled with challenges, but with a strong bench strength and a determined squad, India’s cricketing future looks promising.
