How to Enhance Responsible Gaming?

Responsible Gaming

With the global rise of the casino industry, responsible gaming has become a highly important matter, since millions of players interact with games of chance every day.

We partnered with Michael Slot, the founder of Slot.Day, to learn what constitutes responsible gaming and how various establishments and websites can ensure that their services adhere to these criteria.

What makes responsible gaming important?

Casino games are incredibly easy to access nowadays. In fact, they are easier to access than ever thanks to dedicated websites and mobile apps. The industry is growing every day, and the number of options available to players is truly mind-blowing. The competition is also incredibly high, which forces online casinos to use all tactics available to them to acquire and retain a stable audience, meaning that some of these tactics might not necessarily be great for players.

The issue here lies in the core discrepancy between the player’s best interests and casino profits. The more players wager, the more the casino will earn, and imposing any sort of limitations on players is detrimental to the establishment. In theory, the casino owners don’t necessarily care about the players’ well-being as long as they get to earn their share.

This discrepancy, however, is only true to a certain degree. After all, if the player goes completely broke, they cannot spend any more money at the casino, resulting in the establishment losing a regular customer. However, considering that this is not the typical situation and more of an extreme one, irresponsible casinos might be fine with this, since they’ve already profited a lot.

Finally, if you think of how many people enjoy gambling and how aggressive the marketing for casinos can be, there is no issue in attracting willing customers — it’s more about making sure that they choose a certain website over the competition.

So, why do casinos follow responsible gaming standards at all? Well, first of all, some countries impose these standards on casinos to ensure that the players are better protected against bad financial decisions. Secondly, ensuring higher standards of responsibility makes casinos seem more trustworthy and respectful towards players, which can result in a higher number of willing players. Finally, it is a better long-term strategy in an industry filled with ill-intended websites and scammers — brand recognition and influence can pave the road to success.

The pillars of responsible gaming

Okay, but what even is responsible gaming? Let’s talk about what constitutes the term.

As Michael Slot puts it, there are three main principles that differentiate irresponsible casino practices from responsible ones, and each one of them is essential — the whole idea will collapse the moment you remove one of them.

Informed choice

Players need to know what they sign up for at every moment. For example, quite often players sign up for a bonus expecting free spins and easy money, while in reality there is a wagering requirement they have to fulfill, meaning that the bonus might not even be worth it in the first place. If a casino doesn’t do its best to explicitly explain these requirements, then it can mislead its clients, who will lose their money on wagers they otherwise wouldn’t make.

Another example of it is informing players on game rules and RTP — if a player isn’t aware of the odds of certain winning conditions, they cannot make informed choices, which can easily lead to irresponsible wagering. To put it simply, a responsible casino will provide all the important information right away ensuring that the players are always fully aware of what’s going on and can choose based on knowledge rather than at random. Any establishment that obscures this important information cannot be trusted.

Fair play

Every casino game should be fair and work exactly the way it claims to work. For example, if a slot machine says there is a 1/1000 chance to win a certain sum of money, then it has to be mathematically true — otherwise, it is a scam.

However, as Michael Slot notes, fair play is a nuanced topic when it comes to casino games. First of all, we have to emphasize that the term doesn’t exactly fit casino games fully. When we think of “fair” games, we assume that they aren’t skewed in anyone’s favor, but that’s absolutely not true for casino games. All of them are chance-based and designed in a way to ensure the house always has a certain edge.

For instance, you cannot place a bet on roulette that would offer a 50% chance to win — the casinos add one or two zero sectors to ensure that even if you choose red/black or even/odd, you wouldn’t reach this percentage. Otherwise, the game wouldn’t be profitable for the establishment.

So, when it comes to casinos, fair play means that while the game is a bit skewed, it is skewed exactly in the way it says, and there are no other forms of changing the odds in the casino’s favor. To put it simply, when a casino profits from roulette as is, it is fair and fine — the game is built to ensure this. However, if the software is secretly designed in a way to lower the chances specifically for the player-chosen sectors, then it is a scam.

The problem here is that a single player cannot realistically play enough games to determine whether the game is unfair. Special commissions test these games by generating hundreds of thousands or even millions of playthroughs before they make a verdict. This is why it is highly recommended to only play casino games using well-known and highly-rated websites.

Self-control tools

Finally, any responsible casino should offer ways for players to limit themselves and ensure a healthy interaction with the games. Slot games like Fishin Frenzy, roulette, and other games of chance can be exciting and offer lots of memorable experiences, but they are also highly addictive and can lead to players chasing losses or going into debt, all of which leads to devastating consequences. Any casino that respects its audience will at the very least provide ways for players to control themselves better, which includes time and money limits, pre-set loss and deposit limitations, and self-exclusion options.

Not only that, a responsible casino will provide resources for players who are dealing with problem gambling behavior to help them find professional assistance and ensure they always have options to mitigate the damage caused by bad habits.

Other practices that enhance responsible gaming

Apart from what we described already, there are multiple ways casinos can ensure that they offer a more responsible gaming experience to their players. Let’s highlight some of these practices and explain what makes them so helpful.

Increasing player awareness

Players losing control over their spending is what makes problem gaming so dangerous. One way to help players regain that control is to provide informational content about risks and responsible play. Admittedly, lots of players might skip any sort of information on the matter and jump to gameplay right away, so finding ways to make the message effective can be difficult and requires some creative approach.

Another thing that helps greatly in ensuring players can keep track of what’s happening is simply providing pop-up reminders during long sessions — this can interrupt the gameplay flow and help casino clients regain awareness of the process, which can be helpful for players who easily lose track of their spending.

Data monitoring

Modern online casinos operate with robust tracking tools, making regular audits and data monitoring for red flags not only possible but also very important. As soon as the algorithm finds some suspicious and potentially harmful activity, it can immediately address it in a certain way and help the player stop before the situation turns irreversibly bad for them.

Staff training

Finally, training staff to identify and support at-risk players is a standard nowadays, and any responsible casino does it to ensure that the casino experience is associated with fun and excitement rather than devastating losses, debt, and negative outcomes. It is this level of attention to players that ensures responsible gambling — any high-class casino aims to protect players from particularly bad decisions, which is honestly just a better long-term strategy for the casino owners as well.
