Historical Events on June 23

Anglo-France Alliance (1532)

On June 23, 1532, two powerful kings made a deal. King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France signed the Treaty of Closer Amity With France, also called the Pommeraye Treaty. They did this to protect themselves from another strong ruler, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.

At this time, Europe was divided. Many countries were fighting for power. Henry VIII and Francis I were worried about Charles V becoming too strong. By working together, they hoped to keep him in check.

The treaty said that England and France would help each other if Charles V attacked either of them. It also talked about trade between the two countries. This deal was important because it changed how countries in Europe worked together. It showed that even old enemies could become friends when they had a common problem.

The Protestant Reformation (1547)

On June 23, 1547, something bad happened to an important man named Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse. He was caught and taken to south Germany. Philip I was a big supporter of the Protestant Reformation.

The Protestant Reformation was a time when many people were trying to change the Christian church. They didn’t agree with some things the Catholic Church was doing. Philip I was one of the leaders who helped spread these new ideas.

Philip I had been working hard to protect Protestant beliefs in his land. But the Catholic Emperor, Charles V, didn’t like this. When Philip I was captured, it was a big blow to the Protestant cause. However, his work had already helped the new ideas spread, and the Reformation continued even after he was caught.

Anglo-Portuguese Marriage Treaty (1661)

On June 23, 1661, a very important marriage deal was made. It was between King Charles II of England and Catherine of Braganza, a princess from Portugal. This wasn’t just about love – it was about politics and power.

As part of this deal, Portugal gave England two important places: Tangier in North Africa and Bombay in India. This was a big deal for England. It helped them start building what would become a huge empire around the world.

For Portugal, the marriage meant they had a strong ally to help protect them from Spain. This treaty changed things for both countries. It gave England new lands and trade opportunities, and it gave Portugal a powerful friend.

Treaty of Shackamaxon (1683)

On June 23, 1683, a man named William Penn did something very important. He signed a friendship treaty with a Native American leader named Tamanend, also known as “Tammany”. This happened in Pennsylvania, a place that Penn had started.

The treaty was about peace and respect between Penn’s settlers and the Lenape Indians who already lived there. It said that they would live together peacefully and trade fairly. This was different from how many other settlers treated Native Americans.

Some people think this treaty was the basis for the famous Treaty of Shackamaxon. While we’re not sure if that’s true, we do know that Penn tried hard to be fair to the Native Americans. His actions were unusual for his time and are still remembered today.

French Revolution: King Rejects Third Estate Demands (1789)

On June 23, 1789, King Louis XVI of France made a big mistake. He said no to the demands of a group called the Third Estate. This group had started calling itself the National Assembly. This happened at the start of the French Revolution.

In France at that time, people were divided into three groups or “estates”. The Third Estate was the largest group. It included most of the people, but they had the least power. They were tired of being treated unfairly and wanted changes.

When the king refused to listen to them, it made people very angry. This decision helped push France towards a big revolution. It showed that the king didn’t understand how unhappy people were. This event was one of the sparks that led to huge changes in France and all of Europe.
