Cillian Murphy, Daniel Craig Join Damien Chazelle’s Prison Drama

Damien Chazelle Prison Drama

Oscar-winning actors Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig are reportedly in advanced talks to lead the next film by acclaimed director Damien Chazelle, according to multiple sources including IndieWire, The Playlist, and TheWrap. While the project remains untitled and details are limited, the film is expected to be a gritty prison-set drama, marking a significant shift in genre for Chazelle, who is best known for his stylized musical and dramatic work.

A New Chapter for Damien Chazelle: From “La La Land” to Lockdown Drama

Damien Chazelle, who became the youngest person ever to win the Academy Award for Best Director for La La Land (2016), is pivoting creatively with this upcoming film. After previously considering an Evel Knievel biopic—at one point involving Leonardo DiCaprio—the filmmaker is now focusing on a story set behind prison walls. According to The Playlist, Chazelle has long been interested in the prison drama genre and has reportedly written the script himself.

Why the Evel Knievel Film Didn’t Happen

Chazelle had been attached to a big-budget Evel Knievel biopic for several years, and DiCaprio was rumored to lead the project. However, insiders note that the deal with DiCaprio fell through, and the project was shelved. The reasons for this are not entirely clear, but speculation suggests that scheduling conflicts and creative differences may have played a role.

Moving Ahead with a Darker Tone

Instead, Chazelle has chosen a more intimate and darker project. According to World of Reel, the film is a tense, character-driven drama taking place inside a U.S. prison. This will be Chazelle’s first directorial project since Babylon (2022), and it’s set to be both written and produced by him under his own banner, Wild Chickens Productions, alongside long-time producing partner Olivia Hamilton.

Paramount Pictures Still Backs Chazelle After “Babylon” Misfire

Despite the critical ambition of Chazelle’s last film Babylon, the movie was a commercial failure. Starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Diego Calva, the film had a production budget of nearly $80 million but earned just $65.2 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.

In interviews after Babylon’s release, Chazelle admitted that the film was financially risky and that he feared it could affect his ability to make future movies. However, thanks to his long-standing relationship with Paramount Pictures, he continues to receive studio support. The upcoming prison drama is being financed and distributed by Paramount, a vote of confidence in his creative vision despite the previous setback.

Cillian Murphy’s First Big Original Role After Oscar Win

Fresh off his Best Actor Academy Award for playing physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023), Cillian Murphy is in high demand. His performance was widely praised, and the film grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide, re-establishing Murphy as a leading man on a global scale.

Recent Work and “Peaky Blinders” Film

Since the Oscars, Murphy has been selective with projects. He recently starred in Small Things Like These, a period drama based on the Claire Keegan novella. Set in 1980s Ireland, the film addresses the hidden abuse within the Magdalene Laundries and premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival to critical acclaim. The film was produced under Murphy’s own banner and demonstrated his growing role as a producer and actor-activist.

He is also returning to his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in the Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man, which is set to go into production soon. However, the untitled Chazelle film marks his first fully original project since winning the Oscar.

Daniel Craig’s Bold Post-Bond Career

Daniel Craig, globally recognized for his portrayal of James Bond, has also diversified his career post-007. Following his final Bond film No Time to Die (2021), Craig has taken on more experimental roles.

Art-House and Franchise Commitments

In 2024, Craig starred in Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer”, based on William S. Burroughs’ controversial novel. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where Craig’s performance was described as “raw” and “vulnerable,” marking a significant departure from his action-heavy roles.

He’s also set to reprise his role as detective Benoit Blanc in the third Knives Out mystery, titled “Wake Up Dead Man”, directed by Rian Johnson and scheduled for release on Netflix in 2025. Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter has mentioned Craig as a rumored cast member for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia reboot, though nothing is confirmed.

An Ambitious Lineup: Chazelle, Murphy, and Craig

If finalized, this collaboration would bring together one of Hollywood’s most ambitious directors with two of the most respected actors working today. All three have demonstrated a willingness to take creative risks, and this prison drama could be an ideal platform to explore new artistic territory.

Chazelle’s focus on intense character arcs—seen in films like Whiplash and First Man—makes him a natural fit for a gritty, confined narrative. With Murphy’s brooding intensity and Craig’s versatility, the film is shaping up to be a high-stakes character study rather than a traditional action thriller.

Production Timeline and What Comes Next

According to TheWrap and The Playlist, the project is currently in the casting and pre-production stages. While no start date has been announced, filming is expected to begin in late 2025, with a potential release window in 2026 if all goes according to schedule.

Both Murphy and Craig are represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), and Chazelle is represented by WME (William Morris Endeavor). Industry insiders believe that once casting is finalized, additional details such as supporting actors, plot, and setting will be revealed.

Damien Chazelle’s shift toward a prison drama signals an exciting new direction for the filmmaker, who has already proven his ability to oscillate between musical exuberance and emotional grit. Pairing him with heavyweights like Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig only heightens the anticipation. If the project moves forward as expected, it could become one of the most talked-about prestige films of 2026.

Stay tuned for more updates as this promising film continues to develop.
