Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” is struggling to maintain momentum at the box office.
After a strong $100 million debut over the extended Presidents Day holiday weekend, the superhero film witnessed a steep 68% drop in its second weekend, earning just $28.3 million from 4,105 North American theaters. Despite holding the No. 1 spot at the box office, the film’s decline signals weakening audience interest.
How Does the Drop Compare to Other Marvel Movies?
A significant second-weekend decline is not unusual for comic book blockbusters, but “Captain America: Brave New World” has seen a drop on the steeper side. The film’s 68% fall places it closer to last year’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which dropped 70% after a $106 million debut.
In contrast, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” had a much healthier 47% decline after its $118 million opening. Similar drops were seen in 2022 with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” both of which fell by 67%. However, those films had larger opening weekends, giving them stronger overall box office performances.
A Sign of Trouble for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
With a production budget exceeding $180 million before marketing costs, “Captain America: Brave New World” still has a long way to go before turning a profit. The film has generated $141 million domestically and $289.4 million worldwide so far. However, if it continues to follow the path of “Quantumania,” which failed to cross the $500 million global mark, Marvel Studios and Disney could face another underwhelming box office performance.
“This is the new normal for Marvel movies,” says Paul Dergarabedian, a senior analyst at Comscore. “There’s still no denying these films have appeal, but a 68% drop in the second weekend indicates less enthusiasm than expected for a major Marvel title.”
Lack of Major Competition, Yet a Sharp Drop
Despite facing little competition at the box office, “Captain America: Brave New World” still experienced a significant decline. The only major new release, Neon’s horror-thriller “The Monkey,” earned $14.2 million from 3,200 theaters in its debut weekend, securing second place.
Adapted from Stephen King’s short story, the film carried a modest $10 million budget and was produced by James Wan. While receiving a mixed audience response with a “C+” CinemaScore, it still managed an impressive opening compared to Neon’s past releases.
Other Box Office Performances
- “Paddington in Peru” secured the third spot with $6.5 million, dropping 49% from its debut. The family-friendly film has grossed $25.2 million domestically and $150 million globally.
- “Dog Man”, the Universal and DreamWorks Animation release, earned $5.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $78.7 million and $104 million globally.
- “Ne Zha 2”, a Chinese-language animated sequel, rounded out the top five with $3 million from 800 theaters. The film has made $14.7 million domestically but has been a record-breaking success in China, earning $1.7 billion and surpassing “Inside Out 2” as the highest-grossing animated film in history.
Looking Ahead
With no major blockbuster releases until Disney’s live-action “Snow White” remake on March 21, “Captain America: Brave New World” has little direct competition.
However, its sharp drop suggests diminishing interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-“Avengers: Endgame.” If the film continues to underperform, it could raise concerns for Disney and Marvel’s future projects as audiences show signs of fatigue with the superhero genre.
