The Best Way To Take Care of A Hamstring Injury

Hamstring Injury

Hamstring injuries can be particularly painful. Caused by a tear or strain to a tendon, this injury is usually seen in athletes. However, those who are not athletes can also suffer from this type of injury.

This article takes a look at the best way for you to take care of a hamstring injury. It also shows you how you too can get some relief from the pain.

The Cause of Hamstring Injuries

As we have already seen, athletes can sustain an injury when they tear or strain their tendons. The damaged tendon is located in the back of the thigh. Some athletes also strain or tear the muscles at the back of their thighs.

Hamstring injuries can be caused by a direct blow to the thigh, failing to warm up properly, training too hard, and not having a good training program.

A hamstring injury can be a particularly troublesome problem. This is because it makes walking hard and running impossible. Unfortunately, hamstring injuries are very common in athletes and those who are very active. The good news is that treatment can be fairly easy.

The First Stage Of Treatment

The first stage of treatment for a hamstring injury involves RICE. RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Any sports medicine doctor would tell you to rest your thigh and leg as much as you can. They would also ask you to apply a cold pack to your thigh for up to 20 minutes at least once a day.

Ideally, you would also wrap a bandage around your thigh to help to reduce any swelling. Finally, elevating your thigh and leg can help a great deal. Doing this can reduce the swelling and help to ease the pain.

How Hamstring Injuries Are Made Worse

It is possible for you to make hamstring injuries worse by failing to take care of them. If you don’t rest your thigh, use ice, compress the area, or elevate it, you could make it worse.

Trying to use your thigh by walking could make your injury much worse. Therefore, the best thing that you can do is to deal with the issue as and when it arises.

Pain Medication

People usually take pain medication to help them to get some pain relief. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication can help. There are other non-prescription painkillers that can make a difference too.

Some people even have efficacy from using anti-inflammatory gels and creams. If you use gels and creams or any type of medication please take them as instructed. If you’re in any doubt, please consult your doctor.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can help with recovery from a hamstring injury. You may want to consider seeing a physical therapist if you are unsure as to which exercises you need to do. Making your thigh muscles stronger and your joints more flexible can help.

Hamstring injuries can be painful and they can take time to heal. However, the tips you can find above could help. If you have any concerns about your injury please speak to your doctor.
