In a high-stakes IPL 2024 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), MI seamer Arjun Tendulkar left the field midway through an over after being hit for consecutive sixes by Nicholas Pooran.
The incident occurred during Match 67 on May 17 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Tendulkar, playing his first game of the season, was brought into the playing XI as a replacement for the rested pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.
A Promising Start Turns Challenging
The 24-year-old left-arm seamer had started his spell impressively, conceding just ten runs from his first two overs.
However, his second spell against a well-set Pooran proved to be more challenging. Pooran, already in an aggressive form, welcomed Tendulkar back into the attack with two towering sixes that landed deep into the stands.
This sudden onslaught visibly affected Tendulkar.
Mid-Over Departure Due to Injury
Much to everyone’s surprise, Tendulkar was seen rushing to the dugout after these consecutive sixes.
It was later revealed that muscle cramps had interrupted his spell, preventing him from completing the over. At that point, Tendulkar had figures of 0/22 from 2.2 overs.
Naman Dhir was called upon to bowl the remaining four balls of the 15th over.
Impact on the Match
Pooran continued his aggressive batting against Dhir, hitting him for another six and a boundary.
KL Rahul joined the attack, hitting a six on the last ball of the over, which resulted in 29 runs from the over. This onslaught significantly boosted LSG’s total, pushing them towards a formidable score.
LSG’s Impressive First Innings
LSG posted a challenging total of 214/6 in their first innings.
Pooran, in a stellar display, scored 75 off just 29 balls, including five fours and eight sixes, before being caught by Suryakumar Yadav at long-on in the 17th over.
KL Rahul supported him well with a measured 55 off 41 balls. Following their dismissals, Ayush Badoni (22 off 10) and Krunal Pandya (12 off 7) played crucial cameos to help LSG finish strong.
Arjun Tendulkar’s Roller-Coaster Match
Earlier in the match, Tendulkar had an eventful but ultimately disappointing moment when he trapped Marcus Stoinis in front of the stumps in his second over.
However, the decision was overturned by the third umpire through DRS, as replays showed the ball was bouncing too much and would have missed the stumps.
Despite this setback, Tendulkar maintained his composure, continuing to bowl effectively until his unfortunate departure due to cramps.
Mumbai Indians’ Struggles
Mumbai Indians, having a difficult season, were already out of contention for the playoffs, sitting at the bottom of the points table with just four wins in 13 games.
They hoped to avoid finishing last by securing a win in this match. Despite a promising start, the challenges faced during the match, including Tendulkar’s mid-over departure, added to their woes.
Arjun Tendulkar’s departure from the field after being hit for consecutive sixes by Nicholas Pooran was a significant moment in the match between MI and LSG.
While it highlighted the unpredictable nature of cricket, it also underscored the physical demands placed on players.
As MI reflects on their season, they will look to learn from these experiences and come back stronger in the next edition of the IPL.
