Messi’s Magic: Argentina Defeats Canada 2-0 in Copa America Opener

Argentina Defeats Canada Copa America 2024

Lionel Messi’s impressive performance helped Argentina secure a 2-0 victory over Canada in the Copa America opener. The match, held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, saw Messi assist on both goals, showcasing his continued influence on the team.

Decisive Goals by Álvarez and Martínez

The first goal came in the 49th minute when Messi delivered a through ball to Julián Álvarez. After a throw-in, Messi headed a pass through Canada’s defense to Alexis MacAllister, who passed to Álvarez. Álvarez took advantage of the opportunity and scored, marking his eighth international goal in 32 appearances.

The second goal was in the 88th minute, where Messi assisted Lautaro Martínez, who scored his 25th international goal. This goal punctuated Argentina’s win, solidifying their strong start in the tournament.

Messi’s Milestones

During this match, Messi made history by setting a record for the most Copa America appearances with his 35th match and extending his assist record to 18. Despite not scoring, Messi had notable attempts throughout the game, including a saved shot in the 65th minute and a blocked rebound shot by Derek Cornelius. In the 79th minute, Messi missed a chip, and a tackle briefly shook him in the 82nd minute, but he continued to play.

Messi’s Near Misses

Maxime Crépeau, Canada’s goalkeeper, and the defense thwarted Messi’s multiple chances to score. In one instance, Messi ran to track a long pass, attempted a blocked shot, chased down the rebound, and attempted another blocked shot. Despite the misses, Messi remained determined, reflecting his resilience and passion for the game.

Fans and Atmosphere

The stadium was filled with 70,564 fans who cheered for Messi regardless of his success on the field. The crowd’s chants of “Messi! Messi! Messi!” showed their admiration and support for the Argentine star, highlighting his significant influence and popularity.

Challenges Faced

The match was not without its challenges. Lionel Scaloni, the coach of Argentina, and Messi both acknowledged the challenge of playing on the slippery synthetic turf, installed just days prior to the match. Scaloni noted that the turf affected the speed of passes, making it challenging for the players.

Looking Ahead

Argentina’s next match is against Chile in East Rutherford, New Jersey, while Canada will face Peru in Kansas City, Kansas. Argentina aims to continue their strong performance as they chase their third consecutive major title, following their victories in the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup.

Messi’s Reflections

After the game, Messi expressed his satisfaction with the win, despite missing scoring opportunities. “I’m happy for the victory and to start the tournament with a win,” he said. Reflecting on the physical nature of the game and the challenging pitch conditions, Messi emphasized the importance of patience and seizing opportunities as they arise.
