Carlo Ancelotti Quits Real Madrid to Become Brazil’s Head Coach

Carlo Ancelotti, one of the most accomplished football managers in the modern era, is officially set to leave Real Madrid at the end of the current La Liga season to become the new head coach of the Brazil national football team.

This historic appointment, confirmed by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), marks the first time since 1965 that Brazil will be coached by a non-Brazilian. The Italian tactician will begin his duties with the Seleção on May 26, 2025, just after Real Madrid’s final match of the domestic season.

Ancelotti’s Legacy at Real Madrid: One of the Greatest Ever

Ancelotti leaves Real Madrid with an outstanding legacy. Across two separate managerial spells with the club (2013–2015 and 2021–2025), the 65-year-old Italian guided the Spanish giants to 15 major trophies, including:

  • 3 UEFA Champions League titles

  • 2 La Liga titles

  • 2 Copa del Rey trophies

  • 3 UEFA Super Cups

  • 2 FIFA Club World Cups

  • 3 Spanish Super Cups

During the 2021–22 season, Ancelotti delivered an iconic double, winning both the Champions League and La Liga — a feat that reaffirmed his elite status among the world’s coaching legends.

Despite his achievements, his final season with Real Madrid has fallen short of expectations. The club suffered a 3–2 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the season’s final El Clasico, which left them trailing seven points behind the Catalan side with only three league games remaining. With no domestic or European silverware likely, this will mark Real’s first trophyless season since 2020–21.

Why Brazil Chose Ancelotti

The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) issued a celebratory statement on Ancelotti’s appointment, calling him a “legend of the game” and highlighting the unique nature of this moment:

“This landmark moment sees the coming together of two icons — the only five-time FIFA World Cup champions and a coach with an unmatched record across Europe’s elite competitions.”

The CBF also thanked Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez for facilitating the early release of Ancelotti, even though his contract was set to run until June 2026. The transition, coordinated in part with the help of Brazilian businessman Diego Fernandes, comes at a time when Brazil is looking to return to the pinnacle of world football.

Ancelotti’s Task with the Seleção

Ancelotti's Task with the Seleção

Ancelotti will inherit a talented yet underperforming Brazil side. His predecessor, Dorival Junior, was dismissed in March 2025, following a humiliating 4–1 defeat to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier.

Currently, Brazil sits fourth in the South American World Cup qualifying standings, with five losses in 14 matches. While they are still on track to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the performances have been inconsistent and have sparked concern among fans and analysts alike.

Ancelotti’s first official games in charge will be in June 2025, when Brazil faces Paraguay and Ecuador in must-win World Cup qualifiers.

His experience working with several Brazilian stars at Real Madrid — including Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Éder Militão — is seen as a major advantage in building cohesion and confidence in the national team.

A Managerial Career That Transcends Borders

Carlo Ancelotti is the only manager in football history to win league titles in five of Europe’s top leagues:

  • Italy (AC Milan)

  • England (Chelsea)

  • France (Paris Saint-Germain)

  • Germany (Bayern Munich)

  • Spain (Real Madrid)

He also holds the record for the most UEFA Champions League titles as a manager — five in total — making him the most decorated manager in European club competition history.

His move to Brazil signals a rare step into international football, but one that aligns with his calm leadership, tactical genius, and ability to manage high-pressure environments.

Real Madrid’s Next Chapter: Enter Xabi Alonso

With Ancelotti’s departure now official, Real Madrid is preparing to usher in a new era under former club icon Xabi Alonso. The 43-year-old Spaniard recently announced his exit from German side Bayer Leverkusen, where he achieved immense success.

Under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title, ending Bayern Munich’s decade-long dominance, and reached the final of the DFB-Pokal (German Cup). His tactical intelligence, calm demeanor, and deep understanding of Real Madrid’s culture have made him the top candidate for the job.

According to reports from Spanish media outlets such as AS and Marca, Alonso has already reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid and will sign a three-year contract. He is expected to take charge officially on June 1, 2025, just ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, where he will manage the team for the first time on the global stage.

A Tale of Two Eras: From Master to Disciple

The transition from Ancelotti to Alonso represents more than just a managerial change — it symbolizes a passing of the torch. Alonso played under Ancelotti during his time at Real Madrid and is considered one of the most tactically astute minds in football today.

Real Madrid fans are hopeful that Alonso will build on the legacy left by Ancelotti and lead the club into a new golden era, with young stars like Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, and Endrick joining the experienced core.
