On Monday night, former President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders aboard Air Force One that could significantly reshape military policies in the United States.
The orders, which focus on transgender service members, the reinstatement of discharged troops, diversity initiatives, and homeland defense, have sparked widespread discussion about their potential impact.
Reinstating Service Members Discharged Over COVID-19 Vaccine Refusal
One of the orders aims to reinstate military personnel who were discharged for refusing the Pentagon’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Between 2021 and 2023, approximately 8,200 service members were dismissed for noncompliance with the mandate.
Although the Biden administration rescinded the vaccine mandate in January 2023, only about 110 discharged members have since rejoined the military. Mr. Trump’s new order creates a streamlined process for reintegration, signaling a broader commitment to those affected by the previous policy.
Addressing Policies for Transgender Service Members
Another key order directs the Pentagon to evaluate and establish a policy for transgender service members within 30 days. While the order does not impose an immediate ban, it emphasizes troop readiness and criticizes medical, surgical, and mental health challenges associated with gender dysphoria.
The executive order describes identifying as a gender inconsistent with one’s biological sex as incompatible with the “honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle” required for military service. At a retreat in Florida with House Republicans, Mr. Trump stated, “To ensure we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military. It’s going to be gone.”
Ending Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives
A third order addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the military. It bans race- or sex-based preferences within the armed forces, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security.
“I ordered the end to all of the lawless diversity, equity, and inclusion nonsense policies across the government and private sector,” said Mr. Trump during his Florida speech. “We’re getting it out, and we’ve gotten it out pretty much.”
Under the directive, the defense and homeland security secretaries are required to review educational programs at service academies and other institutions to ensure DEI initiatives and “gender ideologies” are eliminated. The announcement follows Mr. Trump’s broader push to eliminate DEI initiatives across federal agencies, with the Office of Personnel Management already placing DEI employees on leave.
Development of an American Missile Defense Shield
In addition to these policy changes, Mr. Trump signed an order to initiate the development of an American missile defense system referred to as the “American Iron Dome.” The system, modeled after Israel’s successful missile shield, is intended to protect the U.S. homeland from potential threats.
A Shift in Military Strategy
The executive orders signal a significant shift in how the military may approach readiness, recruitment, and social policies under Mr. Trump’s vision. While the orders emphasize troop effectiveness and national security, critics argue they could marginalize certain groups within the armed forces.
With these sweeping changes, President Trump has set the stage for debates on the intersection of military readiness, diversity, and social policies, potentially reshaping the armed forces for years to come.
