Taylor Swift Explains ‘My Boy’ Song After Matty Healy’s TTPD Remark

Taylor Swift Explains 'My Boy' Song

Taylor Swift, the 34-year-old global superstar, recently shared insights into the meaning behind her song “My Boy Breaks All His Favorite Toys,” from her album “The Tortured Poets Department.” In a breakdown of the song for Amazon Music, Swift explained that the track serves as a metaphor for a deteriorating relationship that someone yearns to revive.

The Perspective of a Broken Toy

Swift revealed that the song is written from the viewpoint of a child’s toy, once cherished but eventually broken and discarded by its owner. This perspective represents relationships where one person initially feels highly valued, only to be later devalued or “broken” in their partner’s eyes.

“Which is how a lot of us are in relationships where we are so valued by a person in the beginning, and then all of the sudden, they break us or they devalue us in their mind,” Swift noted. She added that the song captures the denial and hope that often persist in toxic, broken relationships, with the toy clinging to the belief that its owner will return to their initial adoration.

Speculations About the Song’s Inspiration

While “My Boy Breaks All His Favorite Toys” doesn’t explicitly point to a specific relationship, fans are speculating about whom it might be written. Some wonder if it could be about Swift’s most recent exes, actor Joe Alwyn and musician Matty Healy, or someone else entirely.

Matty Healy, the 35-year-old frontman of the band The 1975, briefly dated Swift between May and June 2023 and was rumored to have had a fling with her a decade earlier. When asked about Swift’s new album, Healy claimed he hasn’t listened to much of it but is confident it’s good.

Other Tracks Rumored to be About Healy

Fans are convinced that several other tracks on “The Tortured Poets Department” album are about Matty Healy. “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” mentions a person in a “Jehovah’s Witness suit,” which some link to Healy’s signature black stage outfits.

Their relationship faced criticism due to Healy’s controversial past, which may have dampened Swift’s spirits during her successful Eras Tour. Other songs rumored to be about Healy include “Down Bad,” “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can),” “But Daddy I Love Him,” and the album’s lead single, “Fortnight.”

As fans continue to analyze and interpret the lyrics, Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” album offers a glimpse into the complexities of relationships and the emotions that linger long after they’ve ended.
