Rob Lowe, known for his roles in Parks and Recreation and 9-1-1: Lone Star, recently reflected on a romantic chapter from his past, involving his St. Elmo’s Fire co-star Demi Moore.
During the October 22 episode of Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Lowe, now 60, admitted that he and Moore briefly dated while they were both part of the iconic “Brat Pack” in the 1980s.
A Brief Romance in the “Brat Pack” Era
In the podcast, Rob shared that his romance with Demi Moore occurred during the filming of St. Elmo’s Fire in 1985. “Demi and I briefly… we briefly had a thing,” he revealed, adding that he wasn’t “telling tales out of school” by sharing the story. Their brief fling was part of the youthful whirlwind of their Brat Pack days, when rising stars surrounded them.
Despite their short-lived romance, Moore went on to have high-profile relationships, including her engagement to fellow Brat Pack member Emilio Estevez in 1985. Although the couple never made it down the aisle, Demi ultimately married actor Bruce Willis in 1987. Together, Demi and Bruce shared three daughters—Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30—before their marriage ended in 2000. Through all of these life changes, Rob emphasized that he and Demi have maintained a strong, lasting friendship.
Looking Back at Their Youthful Days
Reflecting on the inevitable romances of their youth, Lowe wasn’t surprised that such flings happened during the Brat Pack era. Look, anytime you put young, 20-something men and women together, hookups are inevitable,” he explained. “And I don’t think that has changed.”
Lowe, now a father of two sons—Matthew, 31, and John Owen, 28—who he shares with his wife of 36 years, Sheryl Berkoff, has since moved on from his days of youthful escapades. But the friendships and memories of those times remain strong.
Excitement for a “St. Elmo’s Fire” Sequel
In addition to reflecting on his past romance with Moore, Rob gave fans hope for a long-awaited sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire. Nearly 40 years after the film’s release, Lowe revealed that plans for a sequel are in motion, though progressing slower than he’d like.
“It’s moving along,” Lowe shared, expressing optimism about the project. “We’re trying to find the right writer and the right story.” Rob confirmed that the original cast, including Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, and Mare Winningham, is on board and excited about the sequel.
Why “St. Elmo’s Fire” Still Resonates
Reflecting on why St. Elmo’s Fire remains a fan favorite after so many years, Lowe believes the movie’s themes about young adulthood and deep friendships continue to strike a chord with audiences. “It was a hit in its time because it spoke to where we all were in our lives,” he said. The film portrayed the uncertainties of early adulthood, grappling with the questions of whether youthful friendships can endure and what lies ahead in the journey to adulthood.
According to Rob, revisiting these beloved characters 40 years later offers a unique opportunity to explore these same themes but from a new perspective. “It’s never too late for happiness,” Lowe explained, excited about the chance to see how the characters have evolved and what challenges they now face as full-fledged adults.
Hope for the Future
As plans for the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel continue to take shape, Rob Lowe remains optimistic and energized about the project. “I’m super excited about it,” he shared, adding that he hopes they can bring the beloved story back to the big screen with the same magic that captured audiences decades ago.
