One of the accusers, identified only as “Kira,” shared her feelings of despair with the BBC, explaining that the club and football authorities’ lack of action even contributed to her suicide attempt. “I didn’t want to exist in a world where I’m constantly reminded that rape allegations can be ignored as long as you’re talented enough,” she explained.

Another woman, identified as “Mia,” expressed her belief that her alleged assault could have been prevented if Player X had been suspended after the first accusation. “If they had decided to take the first allegation seriously…if they had suspended him, I would not have been in that situation,” she stated, underscoring the devastating impact of what she perceives as institutional inaction.

The timeline of Player X’s alleged criminal activities paints a grim picture of delayed responses and ongoing investigations. The first accusation came in August 2021 when Kira reported him to the police, followed by a second complaint in July 2022. The second incident led to Player X’s arrest in 2022 on suspicion of rape. More recently, on November 7, 2024, Player X attended a police station for questioning under caution. This marked the first time he was interrogated specifically regarding allegations made by a fourth woman. These American leagues have protocols that include suspensions, investigations, and public statements, creating a framework for transparency and action. The absence of similar policies within English football has raised concerns among advocates who feel that the league’s current stance enables alleged perpetrators to continue their careers while victims are left without closure.

Club and FA Responses to Kira’s Pleas for Action

Kira has been vocal about her frustration with the FA and Premier League’s lack of intervention. In August 2021, after filing her initial police report, Kira reached out to the FA, Premier League, and Player X’s club, urging them to take action and prevent him from playing until the investigation was complete. However, her request was met with legal barriers; the club cited legal limitations that prevented them from discussing the allegations. The Premier League redirected her to the FA, which ultimately informed her that it could not take action as the alleged behavior did not fall under its safeguarding policies.

Kira’s attempts to prompt action extended into 2024 when she provided documentation to the FA and the club identifying herself as a “vulnerable adult.” Despite this, the FA’s response remained the same. The organization informed her that it could not discuss details of ongoing investigations or any potential safeguarding measures related to Player X’s case. This response, according to Kira, further eroded her trust in football’s governing bodies, as she felt that her safety and well-being were being overlooked.

“Their response has reinforced a devastating message that I don’t matter, that more women coming forward doesn’t matter, and that even when I meet safeguarding requirements, it will never matter,” Kira told the BBC.

Legal and Institutional Barriers in Addressing Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The inconsistent handling of allegations against footballers in England underscores the complexities and legal challenges that clubs face when considering suspensions or other actions. Player suspensions have happened in certain high-profile cases, but these instances are far from standard practice. Some clubs choose to suspend players as a precautionary measure, while others refrain due to potential legal repercussions, fearing defamation claims or lawsuits over unpaid wages.

A notable case in point is former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy, who was suspended in 2021 after facing rape and sexual assault allegations. Mendy, who was later found not guilty on all counts, successfully sued Manchester City for withholding his wages during the suspension. This legal outcome highlighted the financial risks that clubs may face when enforcing suspensions, adding another layer of complication to the issue.

Government and Advocacy Calls for Stronger Regulations

In the wake of these recent revelations, there have been calls for stricter oversight to ensure that football clubs are held accountable for their handling of sexual misconduct cases. Dame Caroline Dineage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, has emphasized the need for reform. Dineage argued that football players serve as public figures and role models, thus requiring clubs to take allegations against them seriously to protect both fans and the broader community.

She highlighted the potential role of a new regulatory body with the authority to impose licensing conditions on clubs, pushing them to act responsibly in cases involving sexual and domestic violence. Advocates hope that such regulations will hold clubs accountable for prioritizing the safety of individuals over profit and reputation. “As part of the new regulator’s role setting licensing conditions, we want to see it have the powers to take clubs to task for their approach and lack of progress when it comes to improving every aspect of equality, diversity, and inclusion,” Dineage explained.

Police Investigation and Official Statements

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed the ongoing investigation into multiple sexual offences allegedly committed by Player X between 2021 and 2023. The police have reassured the public that all individuals who came forward are receiving support from the Metropolitan Police’s victim services. However, the investigation remains in progress, with no formal charges filed to date.

The Premier League, FA, and Player X’s club have all declined to provide detailed comments, citing the active status of the police investigation. The FA did release a general statement regarding their safeguarding policies, emphasizing their commitment to protecting children and vulnerable adults in a football environment. However, the FA refrained from commenting on specific cases or policies regarding players accused of sexual or domestic violence, as these issues currently fall outside the scope of their regulatory framework.

Broader Implications for Football’s Role in Society

The situation with Player X has amplified discussions around football’s role and responsibilities, not only within the sport but also within society. The case has revealed gaps in English football’s policies around sexual misconduct, particularly regarding the lack of a standardized approach for handling serious allegations against high-profile players.

Many advocates and victims argue that the lack of accountability mechanisms enables clubs to place commercial interests above safety and ethical responsibilities.
