We finally have the Nintendo Switch Sports, even though it took a while. If you are a millennial or older, you may remember Wii Sports, which came out 16 years ago (in 2006) and changed the way we play video games completely. At the time, the game was meant to take full advantage of the Wii’s motion controls. Even though it was put away in everyone’s closets after a few months, it was a lot of fun to play with family or friends, and even players could play, people who have never played a video game.
The game was so popular that it led to a sequel called Wii Sports Resort and a remake called Wii Sports Club for the Wii U. The game seemed to have been forgotten, but the Nintendo Switch has brought it back, so we can finally use motion sensing to its full potential on the joycons, but that’s not all: this new experience looks much better than before and could be a key part of having fun playing together.

The new game doesn’t go too far from what came before, and it even takes a lot of ideas from the old games. The game is set in a multi-sport world with tennis, bowling, and sword fighting, as well as volleyball, soccer, and badminton, which we haven’t seen before.
In case you didn’t know, the gameplay is similar to Wii Sports in that users must hold the joy-cons in a way that mimics the movement of the game they’re playing for the Mii to do the same. For example, to hit the ball in tennis, you have to wave your arm. Depending on the angle, the ball will move in a different direction. In bowling, you move your hand under you to make it look like you have a ball that you are going to throw at the pins. In the same way, there is something you can put on your legs that will help you play soccer better.
In the same way, you can use your Miis to make it look like you are playing on the screen. There are also some new avatars that have more details than the Miis and seem like a much-needed improvement.
It’s worth?
If you’ve played Wii Sports before and didn’t think anything would change, you’re wrong. The new games really offer something different, and they look much better (plus the music is a high point). It can be fun to play through the games quickly, but nothing beats playing with other people. Luckily, you can connect to the internet and play against people from all over the world.
But you should have it at home because it could be one of the few (if not the only) good family games. Anyone can play it, from the most demanding PC gamer to grandma, and everyone will have something for the weather. If there are family reunions or parties, it can be a must-have. However, like Wii Sports, it will lose its novelty after a few months, and only a few people will keep playing it.
On the other hand, it’s best to use the joy-cons in the same way as the Wii and not just on the surface. Some games already do it, like Nintendo Fitness Boxing 2, but this brings us back to the experience of doing it with family or friends, which can be fun for several afternoons. The truth is that we don’t see much use in portable mode, and even less if you play with another person, unless you have the Nintendo Switch OLED.
Still, it’s a good way to show off what your Switch can do, even though it’s not that impressive at this point.
