Hollywood actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio is facing widespread criticism for reportedly co-financing a large luxury hotel project in Israel, as tensions and humanitarian concerns escalate in nearby Gaza.
Details of the Project Near Tel Aviv
According to Globes, an Israeli business newspaper, the Tel Aviv District Planning and Building Committee has officially approved the construction of a luxury resort in Herzliya Marina, near Tel Aviv. The project will span 51,000 square meters and is designed to feature 14 floors and 365 rooms.
The Jerusalem Post also confirmed that the resort will include amenities such as a high-end restaurant, conference facilities, retail shops, and eco-certified features. The architectural firm behind the design is Rani Zeese Architects, known for upscale real estate developments.
Initially proposed in March 2018, the hotel was originally designed as a smaller complex with 180 suites across two six-storey buildings. However, the project has expanded significantly in both scale and ambition over the years.
DiCaprio’s Stake in the Investment
DiCaprio, who serves as a United Nations Messenger of Peace with a focus on climate change, reportedly holds a 10% stake in the hotel project. The remaining shares are owned by Israel-based developers The Hagag Group and real estate entrepreneurs Ahikam and Lior Cohen.
Although the project’s eco-friendly certification aligns with DiCaprio’s environmental advocacy, its timing and location have stirred controversy, particularly in light of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Online Backlash and Accusations of Insensitivity
The announcement has been met with significant backlash online, especially from human rights activists and pro-Palestinian supporters.
Shaun King, a prominent activist and author, criticized DiCaprio on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“While Gaza starves, Leonardo DiCaprio is building a 14-story luxury hotel in Israel,”
and accused him of “profiting from apartheid during a genocide.”
The criticism comes at a time when humanitarian organizations have issued urgent warnings about the worsening food crisis in Gaza. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), large parts of the region are at risk of famine due to blockades, limited access to aid, and continuous violence.
Past Ties with Israeli Ventures
This isn’t the first time Leonardo DiCaprio has been involved in Israeli businesses. In the past, he invested in Mobli, a Tel Aviv-based social media startup that has since shut down. He also backed Aleph Farms, an Israeli startup pioneering lab-grown meat, which aligns with his ongoing support for sustainable food technology.
While DiCaprio is widely praised for his work in environmental protection and climate advocacy, his involvement in Israeli ventures has occasionally drawn scrutiny due to the region’s complex political climate.
No Official Comment Yet from DiCaprio
As of now, DiCaprio has not responded publicly to the controversy surrounding his involvement in the hotel project. His representatives have also not issued a formal statement addressing the backlash or clarifying his position on the matter.
Broader Context: Celebrity Investments Under the Spotlight
The situation underscores the increasing scrutiny that celebrities face when their investments intersect with geopolitical conflicts. As global awareness of humanitarian crises grows—especially through social media—public figures are more frequently held accountable for where and how they choose to invest.
Whether DiCaprio will address the controversy or reconsider his involvement remains to be seen. However, the backlash highlights the delicate balance between business interests and ethical responsibility, especially for public figures known for advocacy work.
