The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka. These cases were identified as part of the ICMR’s routine surveillance of respiratory viruses, which forms a part of its efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses across the country, according to the Union Health Ministry’s statement on Monday.
The cases involve two infants admitted to Bengaluru’s Baptist Hospital. A three-month-old female infant, with a history of bronchopneumonia, was diagnosed with HMPV and has since been discharged. An eight-month-old male infant, also with bronchopneumonia, tested positive for the virus on January 3 and is currently recovering. Neither of the infants had any history of international travel, the ministry confirmed.
What is the HMPV Virus?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus known to cause mild to moderate flu-like symptoms, particularly during the winter and early spring months. It spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals or exposure to contaminated surfaces.
Common symptoms include:
- Mild cases: Cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, fever, and runny nose.
- Severe cases: Wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, cough, and pneumonia.
The virus can pose more significant risks to children under one year of age, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In such cases, it may lead to severe respiratory illnesses, including bronchopneumonia and complications in pre-existing conditions like asthma.
HMPV in India and Global Trends
The Health Ministry has acknowledged that HMPV is a globally circulating virus, with cases reported in multiple countries, including India. However, data collected through the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network indicates no significant rise in Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI) in India.
Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been closely monitoring HMPV trends and providing updates, particularly in regions like China. However, the situation remains under control with no alarming trends reported.
India’s Preparedness to Tackle Respiratory Illnesses
The Union Health Ministry has reassured that India is equipped to manage any potential surge in respiratory illnesses, including HMPV. Recent preparedness drills conducted nationwide demonstrated the country’s readiness to deploy public health interventions as needed. Surveillance channels, such as those operated by ICMR, will continue to track the virus’s circulation patterns throughout the year.
Additionally, the ministry highlighted that public awareness and preventive measures, such as hygiene practices, remain essential to reducing the spread of respiratory viruses like HMPV.
While the confirmation of HMPV cases in Karnataka has raised awareness about the virus, the situation is currently under control. The infants diagnosed with the virus are recovering, and ongoing monitoring efforts by the ICMR and Health Ministry ensure that public health remains a priority. Citizens are advised to stay informed, practice good hygiene, and seek medical attention if symptoms of respiratory illnesses arise.
