Hold Your Club the Right Way
Like any sport that involves equipment, there are tried and proven techniques to use in order to maximize your game. In golf, there are 3 basic techniques used to grip a golf club—the 10-finger grip, the overlapping grip, and the interlocking grip.
Whichever grip you choose to use, start by placing your dominant hand on the club right where the shaft meets the handle. Lift the club up at a 45° angle and place the handle in your non-dominant hand where the finger and palm crease is. The butt of the golf club should extend past the base of your pinkie.
Now curl your bottom three fingers around the grip and set your thumb flat on the right side of the club. Your thumb and index finger should be holding the handle between each other while your index finger curls around the grip.
Place your dominant hand on the club in the same way, with your dominant hand sitting on top of your other thumb. Your dominant hand’s thumb will face down the club on the left side, or opposite you to your weak hand’s thumb.
Proper Posture and Stance
Mastering your golfing posture and stance will improve your swing tenfold. With your knees flexed, stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart— wider if using longer clubs.
Point your front foot at a slight angle towards your target, and turn your back for about 90° from your target. Your body should feel balanced and in line with itself.
Also, try not to bend over at the waist. Rather stick your buttocks out slightly with your arms comfortably hanging out in front of you.
Use Your Hips on the Down Swing
A lot of beginner golfers think that all the power in the golf swing comes from the upper body. However, if you’ve played any sport that involves swinging, you understand quickly that the movement and power come from the hips.
On your downswing, you should feel as if your hips are the ones initiating the movement downward. Your upper body will follow and pull your shoulders and arms into action.
Visit Your Local Driving Range
Before taking your golf clubs to the course, put in some time at a driving range. This way you can take your time while perfecting your technique.
Go through your bag of clubs starting with your pitching wedge. Master the one before you move on to the next. Always have a goal when you’re at the driving range so as not to waste time.
Record Your Practice Sessions
Nowadays it’s easy to hit record on your phone and take a video of your golf sessions. While at the driving range, take short videos of your golf swing so you can go back and look at areas to improve. You can join technology and golf in order to learn and improve much quicker.
