Ex-Google CEO Predicts Future of AI Systems: Guarded by Military Bases and Machine Guns

Ex-Google CEO Future AI Military Security

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has made a startling prediction about the future of powerful artificial intelligence systems.

According to Schmidt, these systems might one day be stored in military bases and surrounded by barbed wire and machine guns to protect their capabilities and ensure national security.

AI Systems as National Assets

Schmidt, who served as Google’s CEO and chairman from 2001 to 2011, shared his thoughts in an interview with Noema Magazine, published on Tuesday.

He imagines a time when both the U.S. and China’s governments will be fiercely defending extremely potent AI systems.

“Eventually, in both the U.S. and China, I suspect there will be a small number of extremely powerful computers with the capability for autonomous invention that will exceed what we want to give either to our own citizens without permission or to our competitors,” Schmidt said.

“They will be housed in an army base, powered by some nuclear power source and surrounded by barbed wire and machine guns.”

The AI Race: U.S. vs. China

The U.S. and China are engaged in a fierce competition to lead the world in AI technologyThis race has led to increasing measures by both countries to secure their technological advancements.

For instance, the U.S. has tightened its grip on technology exports to China, including limiting the sales of AI chips produced by companies like Nvidia.

China, on the other hand, is striving to reduce its dependence on U.S.-made chips. Chinese officials have urged domestic tech giants such as Alibaba and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to purchase locally-made AI chips instead.

This is part of a broader effort to develop a self-sufficient tech ecosystem.

A Divided Tech World

Jay Pelosky, founder of TPW Advisory, commented on the increasing division between the U.S. and China’s technology sectors.

“We are rapidly approaching what we call a ‘two tech stack divide,’ where in essence, each country, the U.S. and China, are effectively walling off or ring-fencing their tech stacks from each other,” Pelosky told Business Insider.

Schmidt’s AI Advocacy

Since stepping down from Google, Schmidt has become a prominent advocate for the development and study of AI.

He has invested in AI startups, including Amazon-backed Anthropic, and co-authored “The Age of AI” with the late diplomat Henry Kissinger and MIT’s dean of computer science, Daniel Huttenlocher.

The book explores the risks and opportunities presented by AI technology. Schmidt’s concerns about AI reflect a broader debate within the tech community and government about the ethical and security implications of AI.

As AI systems become more advanced, the potential for their misuse or accidental harm grows, making the need for robust security measures increasingly urgent.

Implications for the Future

While Schmidt’s prediction of AI systems being guarded by military forces may seem far-fetched today, it underscores the significant impact that AI is expected to have on global power dynamics.

The competition between the U.S. and China in AI development is not just about technological superiority but also about maintaining national security and economic leadership.

As AI continues to evolve, governments worldwide will likely face increasing pressure to protect their technological assets.

Whether Schmidt’s vision of AI systems guarded by military bases becomes a reality or not, his comments highlight the critical importance of securing these powerful technologies.

Eric Schmidt’s insights into the future of AI underscore the high stakes involved in the global race for technological leadership.

As the U.S. and China continue to vie for dominance in AI, the need for stringent security measures to protect these powerful systems will only grow.

Schmidt’s vision of AI systems being housed in military bases may serve as a stark reminder of the potential risks and responsibilities that come with the advancement of artificial intelligence.
