Elon Musk’s social media platform X has launched a significant update to its “Following” timeline, introducing AI-powered post ranking through Grok, the company’s in-house chatbot. The feature, announced on November 27, 2025, marks a shift from chronological ordering to an engagement-based system that prioritizes content based on predicted user interest.
How Grok AI Ranking Works
The new system uses Grok to analyze and rank posts from accounts users follow, displaying the most engaging content first rather than in strict chronological order. Grok’s algorithm evaluates posts based on engagement metrics and relevance to determine what users are most likely to find interesting. In an official response, Grok explained that it ranks the Following feed to show the most engaging posts first based on what I think you’ll like. Despite this AI-driven approach, Musk emphasized that users retain full control, with the option to switch back to the traditional unfiltered chronological feed at any time through the menu settings.
Accessing the New Feature
Users can experience the Grok-ranked timeline by updating their X app to the latest version on iOS or Android devices. Once updated, the Following tab will automatically display posts ranked by Grok’s AI algorithm. Those who prefer the classic time-based ordering can tap the three-dot menu at the top of the feed and select the chronological option to revert to the unfiltered view. The update requires no additional setup beyond installing the latest app version, making the transition seamless for X’s user base.
Broader AI Integration Strategy
This launch represents the realization of Musk’s earlier promise to implement a fully AI-powered feed by November 2025. In previous announcements, Musk revealed that Grok would eventually process approximately 100 million posts per day in English alone, categorizing and matching them to relevant users—a task he described as beyond human capability. The platform plans to release algorithm updates every two weeks to maintain transparency and allow users to shape their experience. X has also been developing semantic search capabilities, where users will be able to ask questions and receive displays of all relevant posts in text or visual form.
User Control and Platform Vision
Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, has articulated the platform’s goal to reflect users’ niche interests rather than mainstream noise or political debates. The Grok-powered feed aims to connect users with relevant communities and content that matches their preferences while maintaining the Following feed’s focus on chosen accounts rather than random content. This update complements other recent X features, including the “About this account” verification tool designed to help users identify genuine profiles amid increasing concerns about bots, spam, and AI-generated accounts. The combination of AI personalization with user autonomy positions X’s approach as a middle ground between algorithmic curation and chronological transparency.
