Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister-designate Chandrababu Naidu is set to be sworn into office on Wednesday. This marks his return to power five years after the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) defeated his Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the 2019 Assembly elections.
Naidu’s fortunes reversed dramatically in recent months. He experienced a significant setback in September 2023 when the governing YSRCP arrested him on suspicion of corruption, imprisoning him for nearly two months before the high court granted him bail.
Naidu’s First Stint as Andhra CM
Naidu first became the Chief Minister of the undivided Andhra Pradesh in 1995, following a dramatic political coup that ousted his father-in-law, NT Rama Rao.
Known for his pro-industry and pro-technology stance, Naidu played a pivotal role in transforming Hyderabad into a major technology hub. One of his most notable achievements was securing the establishment of Microsoft’s development center in Hyderabad.
The Meeting with Bill Gates
During the AP AgTech Summit in 2017, Naidu recounted his successful endeavor to bring Microsoft to Hyderabad. In the late 1990s, he managed to secure an appointment with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who was in New Delhi for business. Despite initial challenges in arranging the meeting, Naidu attended a cocktail party where Gates was present.
“I made a presentation through a laptop and I was the first Indian politician to do so,” Naidu recalled. This innovative approach caught Gates’ attention, leading to an extended meeting that lasted 40 minutes instead of the scheduled 10 minutes. Gates was impressed with Naidu’s vision and commitment to using digital technology to improve governance.
Gates’ Perspective
Bill Gates also shared his memories of the meeting during the valedictory session of the AP AgTech Summit. “I was told that there is someone who believes in digital technology even more than you do. It was hard to believe but when we met, he had his digital equipment – computer – and he had the vision to make the government better by using advanced tools,” Gates said.
The Establishment of Microsoft in Hyderabad
Following this pivotal meeting, Microsoft decided to establish its India Development Center in Hyderabad in 1998. This move not only reinforced Hyderabad’s reputation as a technology hub but also paved the way for future leaders like Satya Nadella, who hails from the region, to rise to prominent positions in the tech industry.
Chandrababu Naidu’s proactive approach and vision for a technologically advanced Andhra Pradesh played a crucial role in convincing Microsoft to set up its development center in Hyderabad.
This achievement has had a lasting impact on the region’s development and highlights Naidu’s legacy as a leader committed to technological progress and industrial growth.
