The Baller League UK is back for its second season, uniting football icons, YouTube stars, and professional and semi-professional players for one of the most unique football events in Britain.
The six-a-side indoor competition was created by entrepreneur Felix Starck and backed by German football stars Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski. The latest season kicked off at London’s Copper Box Arena on Monday, 27 October. Matches will run weekly for ten weeks until the end of December, with Sky Sports and YouTube broadcasting each game live.
Starck told BBC Sport: “Most people liked it that are in our audience group, maybe the 55-year-olds didn’t like it so much, but the kids like it, so what do we care about the 55-year-olds? We’re trying to democratise football and make it accessible.”
He added that many of the league’s fans attended their first-ever live football acth during Season 1, which was a clear indication that the project is connecting football “back to the base again”.
Football fans who enjoy placing friendly bets on all the action will enjoy this fresh and fast-paced format. Matches are broadcast live and feature established names and fresh talent, and some sports fans are turning to unrestricted UK sports wagers to explore alternatives to conventional sportsbooks like Gamstop. These options appeal to punters who want more flexibility when betting on new competitions like the Baller League.
Season 2 features even more stars, with all teams from the debut season returning alongside two newcomers: Clutch FC, managed by England Lioness and Euro 2022 winner Chloe Kelly, and Rukkas FC, led by actor and producer Idris Elba.
Familiar faces are also returning to the dugout: John Terry manages the 26ers, Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge are remaining up for Deportrio, Ian Wright and Alan Shearer lead Wembley Rangers AFC, and Maya Jama and Alisha Lehmann reunite as managers of MVPs United.
YouTube stars are also participating in the competition this season. Miniminter (Simon Minter) and Tobi Brown from the Sidemen collective are returning to manage M7 FC and VZN FC, respectively. Sharky, who led SDS FC to the inaugural title last season, is looking to defend his crown.
Other influencer team managers include AngryGinge for Yanited and Niko Omilana for NDL FC. The latter has teased a major signing for his team, saying he is “drafting an active Premier League player”, which will be a first in Baller League history. During the opening games, the player wore a mask, but fans speculate it could be James Ward-Prowse.
Twelve teams will compete over the next ten weeks. The top four sides in the league table will qualify for the playoffs, with two semi-finals and a grand final scheduled for January 2026. Each team consists of a twelve-player squad, including recently retired professionals, futsal stars, and former academy prospects. Matches consist of two 15-minute halves.
The competition’s format is part of what makes Baller League so distinctive. Gamers are played on small indoor pitches without corners. The final three minutes of each half feature unpredictable twists, like three-a-side play, long-range goals counting double, or goalkeepers banned from using their hands. These “gamechanger” moments often decide the outcome of a tight match and adds an element of chaos loved by the fans.
Matches that end in a draw are decided by MLS-style one-on-one penalties, which keeps players on the edge of their seats.
This year’s player lineup features several Premier League and EFL names. Joleon Lescot from Manchester City joins Deportrio, alongside Marvin Sordell and Josh Harrop. Martyn Waghorn and Nile Ranger play for N5 FC, while Henri Lansbury and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson add experience to M7 FC.
The combination of elite talent and fun rules promises another unpredictable season of Baller football.
