NewJeans Announce Hiatus After Court Battle Setback with Ador

NewJeans hiatus court battle

Popular South Korean K-pop group NewJeans has officially announced a break from all group activities following a court ruling that went against them in their ongoing legal battle with their record label, Ador. The decision comes after the group’s attempt to distance themselves from the label and operate independently under a new name, NJZ.

Final Show Before Hiatus at ComplexCon Hong Kong

The announcement was made during NewJeans’ performance at ComplexCon Hong Kong on Sunday, where they debuted a new song titled “Pit Stop”. This marked their first public appearance since the court’s decision and may be the last for some time.

During the show, the five members — Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Heyin — took turns addressing their fans. Speaking in both English and Korean, they shared heartfelt messages.

“This might be our last performance for a little while,” said Hanni and Danielle. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but we believe this is something we need to do at this moment.”

They emphasized that the break is not a retreat, but a step towards protecting themselves and their values.

Court Blocks Independent Activities

On Friday, a Seoul court ruled that NewJeans cannot arrange their own appearances, make music, or sign advertisement deals while their dispute with Ador is ongoing. The court found that the group’s claims against the label did not “sufficiently prove that Ador violated their significant duty.” It also stated that Ador had met most of its contractual obligations, including payments.

This ruling severely limits the group’s ability to function outside Ador and complicates their plans to rebrand as NJZ, as doing so could now lead to financial penalties for contract breach.

Group Speaks Out on Mistreatment and Standing Up for Rights

The conflict between NewJeans and Ador dates back to August 2024, when the group publicly accused the label of mistreatment and trying to undermine their careers. One member, Hanni, even alleged she experienced workplace harassment.

Despite the legal ruling, the group remains firm in their decision to speak up.

“We had to speak up to protect the values we believe in,” said the group. “Standing up for our dignity and rights is something we had to do — and we don’t regret it.”

Ador Responds to the Group’s Actions

In a statement released the next day, Ador expressed disappointment over NewJeans performing under a different name and unilaterally announcing a hiatus, which they say contradicts the court’s decision.

“Ador is fully committed to supporting NewJeans under the terms of our exclusive contract,” the company said. “We hope to meet with the artists soon to discuss the path forward.”

A Break at the Peak of Their Career

The news of the hiatus has shocked fans worldwide. NewJeans has been one of K-pop’s fastest-rising acts, known for their fresh 1990s R&B-inspired sound and energetic performances. In 2023, they became the eighth biggest-selling music act globally and received a Best Group nomination at the MTV Awards.

Their show in Hong Kong attracted more than 11,000 fans and ended with emotional messages and uncertainty about the group’s future.

The hiatus of NewJeans marks a turning point in their career, as they fight for greater control and fairness in their professional lives. While the future remains uncertain, the members have shown courage in speaking out and taking a stand — not just as artists, but as individuals. Fans around the world will be eagerly waiting to see what comes next.
