After scoring three goals in the Sunday final against Argentina to extend his tournament total to eight, France’s Kylian Mbappé is named the 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner.
With seven goals overall, Lionel Messi would have won the game on assists if he and Kylian Mbappé had been matched. After regulation time expired with a tie score of 3-3, Argentina won the thrilling championship game (4-2) on penalties.
Just Fontaine set a World Cup record by scoring 13 goals in 1958, but Mbappé, 23, is the first Frenchman to win the Golden Boot. However, the trophy hadn’t yet been created at the time. At the 2018 World Cup, Antoine Griezmann came in second in terms of goals scored.
Kylian Mbappe is also only the second player to score in back-to-back World Cup finals and the fifth overall to score in successive World Cup finals.
Mbappé cannot claim to be the youngest Golden Boot winner in history. At the 2010 World Cup, Germany’s Thomas Müller, then 20 years old, won it. Müller came up just short of being the first player to win the Golden Boot twice in 2014.
