Historical Events on June 11

The Principalía

Back in 1594, the king of Spain, Philip II, made an important decision about the Philippines, which Spain ruled at the time. On June 11, he said that the local Filipino leaders and nobles, known as chieftains, would have special rights and powers. This created a powerful class of native Filipino nobles called the Principalía. The Principalía helped the Spanish rule the Philippines for many years afterwards and had a big impact on Filipino society.

Monmouth Rebels

Monmouth Rebels

About a hundred years later, in England, there was a rebellion against the Catholic king, James II. The rebellion was led by James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, who was the king’s nephew and wanted to take the throne for himself. The rebellion started on June 11, 1685. There were some battles, but in the end, the king’s army beat Monmouth’s rebels. Monmouth was captured and later executed. This event showed that many English people were unhappy with having a Catholic king.

United States Declaration of Independence

Moving forward to 1776 in America, the 13 colonies were getting ready to declare independence from England. On June 11, the Continental Congress (the group in charge of the colonies) chose five men to write the Declaration of Independence. These men were Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. Jefferson did most of the actual writing. The Declaration explained why the colonies wanted to be free from England and listed all the bad things the English king had done. It was a very important document in American history.

Rutherford B. Hayes Nominated

In 1876, the Republican party met to choose their candidate for president of the United States. At their big meeting, called a convention, they picked Rutherford B. Hayes to be their candidate on June 11. Hayes went on to win the election in a very close and controversial race. As president, he ended Reconstruction, which was the period after the Civil War when the North controlled the South.

Spain Declares War Against the United States

In 1898, the United States was fighting a war against Spain, called the Spanish-American War. The war was about Cuba, which was a Spanish colony at the time. Many Americans thought the U.S. should help Cuba become independent. On June 11, 600 U.S. Marines landed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. They fought against the Spanish and took control of the area. The U.S. won the war, and Cuba became independent. The U.S. still has a naval base at Guantanamo Bay today.
