Control iPhone or iPad with Eye Tracking: Apple’s New Accessibility Features

Apple New Accessibility Features Eye Control iphone ipad

Apple has recently unveiled a range of innovative accessibility features set to be integrated into its software platforms, iOS and iPadOS, in the coming months. Among these features is the highly anticipated eye-tracking capability, designed to enhance usability for individuals with physical disabilities.

Eye-Tracking: Navigating with Ease

One of the most notable features is eye tracking, which leverages artificial intelligence to allow users to navigate through iOS and iPad OS using just their eyes. The front-facing camera facilitates quick setup and calibration, with all data securely stored on the device, ensuring privacy. This feature is compatible with all iOS and iPad OS apps without requiring additional hardware.

Music Haptics: Feel the Rhythm

Apple is introducing “music haptics,” a feature that utilizes the iPhone’s Taptic Engine to produce vibrations in sync with audio from Apple Music. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, enabling them to experience music through a series of taps, textures, and refined vibrations. Developers will also have the opportunity to integrate this functionality into their apps via a new API.

Reducing Motion Sickness

To address the issue of motion sickness, especially when using an iPhone or iPad in a moving vehicle, Apple has developed vehicle motion cues. Animated dots on the screen’s edges represent changes in vehicle motion, helping to reduce sensory conflict without affecting the main content. This feature can be activated automatically or manually via the control center.

Enhanced Siri Interaction

Another significant addition is vocal shortcuts, allowing users to assign custom phrases that Siri can recognize to perform shortcuts and complete complex tasks. This enhances the user experience, making it more personalized and efficient.

Listen for Atypical Speech

The “Listen for Atypical Speech” feature employs machine learning to understand unique speech patterns, specifically designed for users with conditions such as cerebral palsy, ALS, or those recovering from a stroke. This ensures more accurate voice recognition and improved communication.

Upcoming Features and AI Integration

Apple’s upcoming software updates, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, are expected to be rich in AI-powered features, further enhancing the overall user experience. The company is in discussions with OpenAI and Google to explore potential collaborations on generative AI functionality.

Commitment to Accessibility

Apple’s commitment to accessibility is evident in these updates, aimed at making their products more inclusive. The announcement coincides with Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May 16th, highlighting the company’s ongoing efforts to support individuals with disabilities.

These advancements mark a significant step forward in making technology more accessible to everyone, ensuring that Apple’s products remain at the forefront of innovation and inclusivity.
